Sam Bradford might need ankle surgery after this season

AP Photo

According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford may need to undergo offseason ankle surgery.  There is the chance that just resting his ankle after the season will help.

“Sam Bradford will never be fully healthy this season. That’s an established reality for the potential superstar quarterback. His ankle is not 100 percent, he is still battling soreness from the ligaments being stretched, and managing him through this condition will remain a daily chore for the Rams and their training staff.

“That’s not to say it will doom his season, or be a constant bother. But there will be good days and bad days — it’s the nature of the injury — and when the season ends there is a definite possibility that a corrective procedure will be prescribed, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

“Naturally at this point, just a few weeks into training camp, no one here is thinking that far forward. And depending on how the ankle withstands the rigors of the regular season, prolonged offseason rest could be prescribed rather than surgery,” reported La Canfora.

NFL reportedly planning on using replacement officials during the regular season

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the NFL is now planning on using replacement officials during the regular season.

“League executives said Monday they now foresee starting the 2012 regular season with replacement officials,” reported Mortensen.

With the way these officials have been calling games during the preseason, the NFL would be stupid to not strike a deal with the regular officials.

Jeff Fisher not concerned with Sam Bradford’s ankle

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford recently claimed that his ankle still isn’t 100 percent.  Head coach Jeff Fisher isn’t concerned about it.

“There’s going to be residual effects from high-ankle sprains, especially when you come back into practice like he is,” Fisher said.

“But we don’t anticipate it to be a problem, and it hasn’t been one. He’s moving around fine.”

NFL Referee’s Association has a list of offciating errors from the HoF game

The NFL Referee’s Association was paying close attention to Sunday night’s Hall of Fame game between the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints.  They wrote up a report to keep track of the officiating errors made during the game.

“Professional NFL officials are graded after every game,” NFLRA counsel Michael Arnold said in a release, per ProFootballTalk.com.  ”Several of the NFL Referee Association’s officials who grade for Division-I college conferences did a review of the Hall of Fame Game working from a recording of the television feed.  Normally, there would be an opportunity to also view the ‘Coaches’ Tape, which provides two views of every play, but multiple costly errors were still evident.  Numerous errors in field mechanics, game administration and even the coin toss negatively impacted the quality of the game.”

The thing that really stuck out to me about Sunday night’s game is that there wasn’t one holding call made for the entire game.  I wonder if they noticed the players that were mocking the bad officiating as the game went on.

Sam Bradford’s ankle still isn’t healthy

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford told reporters on Sunday that his ankle still isn’t 100 percent healthy, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“It’s close,” Bradford said. “I think it’s as good as it’s going to feel. It’s something that we’re managing right now. I’ve been able to take every snap so far without any setbacks and I think that’s a positive sign.”

Bradford did admit that it’s been frustrating that his ankle is still bothering him.

“Yeah, it is a little bit frustrating that it’s somewhat there still,” Bradford said. “I thought that with rest in the offseason, it would’ve been gone by now. But it’s not. I’ve talked about it with Reg (trainer Reggie Scott). I understand what his plan is, and I think we’re doing as good as we can right now in managing it.”

If the Rams are going to have a chance to bounce back this season, they’ll need Bradford to be healthy.

Roger Goodell says football needs to be included in the Olympics

Getty Images

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell believes that football should be included as an Olympic sport.  He told Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com on the Dan Patrick show, that he’s been taking the necessary steps to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

“Absolutely. We’re already taking steps to gain that IOC recognition. We have, I think, 64 countries that are playing American football now, and that’s one of the requirements. That’s been growing dramatically — I think it was 40 just five years ago,” Goodell said.

Goodell’s goal is to help the game of football to continue to grow.

“Our point is just to keep growing the game,” Goodell said. “We’re having a tremendous reaction in London and the UK for the game of football, our regular season game over there is sold out again this year, we are seriously contemplating as early as 2013 playing two NFL games next season and I think we’ll do that. It’s a response to the tremendous fan reaction and the growth of the game. If we can continue to grow the game there and have the fan reaction that we have, there very well may be a franchise in London.”

I think football would be a great olympic sport, but who would play?  NFL players would never sign up for the Olympics with the chance of ruining their careers by suffering an injury.  I believe they would rather be injured in an NFL game where their fighting for a Super Bowl ring.

John Madden doesn’t believe in the “Madden Curse”

Getty Images

Former NFL television commentator and the creator of the Madden football video game–John Madden–says he doesn’t believe in the “Madden curse.”

“I was on the cover for several years, and I never once even pulled a hamstring,” Madden said, breaking into a laugh, per the Detroit Free-Press. “It’s a violent sport. Injuries are going to happen.”

“If there was such a thing (as a curse), you couldn’t ask for a better man to prove that wrong than who we’ve got this year,” Madden said about Johnson. “He might be as close to indestructible as we’ve ever had on the cover. Maybe I shouldn’t say that…that might…I’m not going to talk about that any more.”

I’ll be honest I don’t believe in the curse either, injuries are very common in the NFL.

Jeff Fisher happy with what he sees from Isaiah Pead

St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher has been very happy with what he’s seen from rookie running back  Isaiah Pead so far in training camp.

“He’s just what we thought … Tremendous speed, quickness, and vision out of the backfield,” said Fisher, per Evan Silva of Rotoworld.com.

The Rams hope that Pead can come in and excel behind veteran Steve Jackson and take over once he retires.

Rams’ Trumaine Johnson overslept missed first practice

St. Louis Rams rookie cornerback Trumaine Johnson ended up over sleeping, which caused him to miss his flight on Wednesday which in turn caused him to miss his first training camp practice.

“I set my alarm clock,” Johnson said after his day of practice on Thursday, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I didn’t hear it. I missed my flight. I messed up.”

Johnson over sleeping and missing practice isn’t unheard of when it comes to NFL rookies.  I’m sure he’ll make sure he never misses another practice.

Rams sign Janoris Jenkins

AP Photo

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Rams have signed rookie second round draft pick, cornerback Janoris Jenkins.

Jenkins’ contract is worth $5 million over four years, with $3.1 million guaranteed.  His deal includes the highest percentage of guaranteed money among any other second round pick in this year’s draft.

Now the Rams need Jenkins to come to training camp focused and ready to make an immediate impact in his rookie year.

Rams, Steven Jackson working on a retirement contract

Getty Images

Running back Steven Jackson told Mike Florio  on PFT Live that he’s working on a contract with the St. Louis Rams that will make it possible for him to retire as a Ram.

“Jackson said on Tuesday’s PFT Live that he’s currently talking to the Rams about a contract that would allow him to retire as a member of the only team with which he has played,’ Florio wrote on ProFootballTalk.com.

It would be great if a class act like Jackson could get a Super Bowl before he retires for good.

Rams’ Robert Quinn arrested for DWI

Getty Images

According to KSDK 5 in St. Louis, Rams defensive end Robert Quinn was arrested for DWI earlier this month.  He was also charged with two other traffic violations.

With Quinn being arrested on July 10th, it’s amazing that this story was able to stay covered up for over a week.

The Rams drafted Quinn in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft.

Sam Bradford’s ankle still bothers him

Getty Images

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford was recently asked how he’s doing after dealing with an ankle injury that eventually shut him down for good last season.

“It’s good, it’s good. I would say there’s still days where it’s not 100 percent, but I really haven’t had any major setbacks. It seems to be getting better every week. I’m hoping by the time training camp gets here that it’ll really be a non-factor,” said Bradford

Bradford is going to need a miracle over the next couple of weeks if he expects his ankle to be ready for training camp.  I’m sure the Rams will take things slow with him, in order avoid any major setbacks during camp.

Gregg Williams says he’ll coach again in the NFL

Getty Images

Former NFL defensive coordinator Gregg Williams told the media on Friday that he plans on coaching again.  Right now he can only sit and wait, since he was suspended indefinitely by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

“I will coach again,” said Williams, who declined any further questions.

Williams was set to start his first season as the St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator this season.  Then the bounty scandal came and turned his life upside down.

I believe in the end Williams will coach again in the NFL, but I don’t know if he’ll back in 2013.
