Jon Gruden still open coaching in the NFL
AP
Former NFL head coach and current ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden hasn’t completely closed the door on a possible return to the coaching ranks of the NFL.
During an interview with Bryant Gumbel of HBO’s Real Sports, Gruden was asked what’s stopping him from returning to the field.
“I don’t know,” Gruden said via the Tampa Tribune. “I’m trying to figure out where I’m going. If the right opportunity presents itself, I will come back.”
One thing that’s likely keeping Gruden from returning, is that he’s still not over the fact that he was fired by the Buccaneers.
“I got fired; I was emotional,” Gruden said. “I was upset and I’m still emotional and upset about it to a degree when I think about it.”
Gruden ultimately has the choice to remain in the broadcast booth and make very good money or get back on the field and make even more money. Tough life.

The New Orleans Saints have announced that they’ve acquired linebacker Barrett Ruud in a trade from the Seattle Seahawks.
“New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday that the club has acquired veteran linebacker Barrett Ruud from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a future undisclosed draft pick,” the Saints announced on their website.
Austin Collie’s agent says he didn’t suffer a concussion
Getty Images
On Monday, Colts head coach Chuck Pagano confirmed that wide receiver Austin Collie suffered a concussion in Sunday night’s preseason game against the Steelers.
Now Collie’s agent, Don Yee is reportedly saying his client doesn’t have a concussion.
“It would be premature to conclude anything at this juncture; he is going to go through the normal protocols,” said Yee, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
If Collie did suffer a concussion, it would be his fourth in 21 months, which is probably why Yee is trying to keep everything under wraps.
Browns’ Josh Gordon reportedly looking brilliant in practice
AP
According to Steve Doerschuk of the CantonRep.com, rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon has looked great over the past couple of practices.
“After some rough spots in training camp, Gordon looked brilliant — at least in the context of Browns wide receivers — for a second straight practice,” wrote Doerschuk.
It would be a pleasant surprise if Gordon can come out of no where this season and be a legitimate number one target for Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden.
Giants Tuesday Morning News and Nuggets
What you need to know this morning…..
WR Hakeem Nicks returned to practice yesterday. Tom Coughlin said he will be bringing Nicks along slowly and did not know if he would play in the upcoming preseason games Friday vs Chicago or Wednesday vs New England.
Coughlin said he had very little information about the injury to RB Ahmad Bradshaw’s hand, which suffered a contusion in the game vs the Jets last Saturday.Bradshaw practiced, but his participation was limited. Rookie RB David Wilson will begin seeing more time with the first team, Coughlin said.
DT Marvin Austin (back) is coming along, but Coughlin had no update on when he would resume practicing. OT Will Beatty (back) is “struggling” and Coughlin was more open about the possibility of moving forward with out him:
“There’s going to have to be flexibility,” Coughlin said as per Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN New York. “Whether Sean (Locklear) plays left or right, or whether David Diehl plays left or right, or that type of thing. We obviously expect and live in expectation that Beatty will come back to the practice field unless something would happen otherwise. We’re getting close (to the season) and those five guys need to play a lot together.”
LB Michael Boley (hamstring), CB Jayron Hosley (turf toe), CB Michael Coe, DE Adrian Tracy and DB Brandon Bing all sat out with hamstring issues. LB Jacquian Williams (hip) was back practicing yesterday for the first since the beginning of camp.
Workout warrior LB Mark Herzlich, who sustained a hip pointer vs the Jets was also out on the field. He apparently cannot be held down.
The “cold tub” hazing incident was covered ad naseum yesterday, and hopefully it’s over. Geico SportsNite had reactions from the TIMEX yesterday:

Vikings plan on holding Adrian Peterson out from this week’s game
AP
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Minnesota Vikings plan on holding out running back Adrian Peterson from this week’s preseason game.
Vikings do not plan to play RB Adrian Peterson Friday vs. San Diego, though team is expecting him to argue his case for playing time in game
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 20, 2012
As much as Peterson wants to push himself and play, the Vikings need to make sure he doesn’t become his own worst enemy and become a danger to himself.
Eagles’ Rodgers-Cromartie and Patriots’ Chung go down with injuries
AP
Both Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung left tonight’s preseason game with shoulder injuries.
I’m sure we’ll find out the extent of each player’s injury as the week goes on. But both Chung and Rodgers-Cromartie are a big part of the defense of their respective teams.
X-rays negative on Mike Vick’s ribs
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Micheal Vick was knocked out of tonight’s preseason game against the New England Patriots after he took a shot to the ribs from Jermaine Cunningham of the Pats.
Vick went to the locker room to undergo x-rays on his ribs and they ended up coming back negative. My guess is that they’re bruised.
It seems like every season Vick suffers some type of rib injury
Andy Reid, Cullen Jenkins get into a sideline shouting match
During tonight’s Monday Night Football preseason game between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots, Eagles head coach Andy Reid ended up getting into a shouting match with defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins on the sideline.
The Philadelphia Inquirer has the following report:
Andy Reid uncharacteristically got into a verbal back and forth with one of his players when he jawed with Cullen Jenkins on the sideline during the second quarter of tonight’s preseason game against the Patriots.
The argument was caught by ESPN cameras. Reid said something to Jenkins and the defensive tackle appeared to say something in return to his head coach. Defensive line coach Jim Washburn then stepped in between the two. Reid then yelled at Washburn.
The Eagles had just allowed the Patriots to score a touchdown after they went 80 yards in 13 plays. A Ryan Mallett 7-yard TD pass to tight end Alex Silvestro ended the drive.
Looks like Reid has his team on the right track heading into the season.
Ndamukong Suh wants to take down Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning
AP
Detroit lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh isn’t looking to clean up his reputation. Instead he wants to take down more quarterbacks.
“I love hitting Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler. Ben Roethlisberger, I would like to go against him, because they say he’s one of the hardest to take down,” Suh said, via NFL.com. “I see that as a challenge, so I would love to take him down multiple times. Peyton Manning, oh, I would love that. I think Michael Vick, I did sack him, one of the most elusive quarterbacks to ever play the game. I took him down with one arm.”
Suh explained what a dirty player is.
“A dirty player is somebody who ultimately is trying to hurt somebody. There’s a huge difference,” Suh said. “There’s no gray in that. Like, you have no conscience, no nothing, no guilt. I don’t have that mean streak in me. I don’t play angry. It’s not anger.”
Report: Dez Bryant dealing with Patella tendonitis
AP
According to Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com, Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is suffering from Patella tendonitis.
Filed to @espndallas – Patella tendinitis for Dez Bryant. Rest is the word. Too early to know if he plays in preseason
— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) August 20, 2012
As far as I know, the only way for Bryant to feel better, is to rest his knee.
Bucs awarded Jordan Shipley off waivers
AP
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been awarded wide receiver Jordan Shipley off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals.
Tampa Bay was awarded former Bengals WR Jordan Shipley on waivers today.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 20, 2012
The Bengals gave up on Shipley as he continues to come back from tearing his ACL last season. The Bucs claimed him because they need an upgrade in the slot.
Warren Sapp still believes Jeremy Shockey is the bounty gate snitch
Getty Images
Former NFL defensive tackle and current NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp was on 660 WFAN in New York with Mike Francesa and told him that he still believes former Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey is the bounty gate snitch.
Hahahahaha. A very angry Warren Sapp just dropped a “********” on the YES network. Did it get thru on WFAN?
— Jimmy Traina (@JimmyTraina) August 20, 2012
Warren Sapp just told Mike Francesa the NFL made him “stay home” for 30 days after he accused Jeremy Shockey of being a snitch.
— Jimmy Traina (@JimmyTraina) August 20, 2012
Sapp told Francesa he still believes Shockey was the snitch in the Saints’ Bountygate.
— Jimmy Traina (@JimmyTraina) August 20, 2012
Sapp really has some problems if he still believes Shockey was the snitch. I wonder what the NFL will think of this interview.

#Colts‘ Pagano: WR Austin Collie did suffer concussion. He felt good today. Listed day-to-day.

This is the fourth concussion in 21 months that Collie has suffered. This not a good sign for Collies NFL career.
Roy Helu dealing with soreness in both Achilles’
AP
According to John Keim of the Washington Examiner, Redskins running back Roy Helu is dealing with soreness in both of Achilles tendon’s.
Shanahan said both of helu’s achilles are sore. #redskins
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 20, 2012
The Redskins are already concerned about Helu’s durability and something like this certainly won’t help them sleep easier at night.
