Yankees honor Roger Maris’ 61 homer season

NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees have held a ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Roger Maris’ 61-homer season, a total that the families of Maris and Mickey Mantle still believe is the legitimate record.

Maris and Mantle engaged in a thrilling chase top Babe Ruth’s 34-year-old mark that season, and on Saturday family members of the “M&M Boys” joined with several of the 1961 World Series champion Yankees to pay tribute to Maris’ accomplishment.

Wearing white gloves, Derek Jeter brought onto the field the bat Maris used to hit the record-breaker off Boston’s Tracy Stallard on Oct. 1, 1961. Sal Durante, the fan who caught the milestone hit in right field of the original Yankee Stadium, brought the ball onto the field, also using white gloves. Both items were on loan from the Hall of Fame.
