Mark Teixeira returns from sore wrist Monday against White Sox

Mark Teixeira sat out the entire weekend series against the Red Sox due to left wrist soreness, but Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports that he’s playing first base and batting cleanup tonight against Gavin Floyd and the White Sox. Teixeira originally injured the wrist on a swing against the Red Sox on July 29 and…

Teixeira feels fine after hitting in cage, will play tonight

Via Meredith Marakovits, first baseman Mark Teixeira said his sore left wrist felt fine after taking swings in the batting cage today. He says he’s going to play tonight, but the lineup has not yet been posted. Teixeira did not play at all against the Red Sox this past weekend due to lingering soreness in the wrist he originally injured on a swing and aggravating diving after the ball. He received a cortisone shot a few weeks ago.

Teixeria hopes to play Monday night

Mark Teixeira hasn’t played since last Thursday due to a sore wrist that began bothering him about three weeks ago, but he is optimistic that he can play tonight against the White Sox.

“There is definitely improvement,” Teixeira told Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com before Sunday’s game. “We just want to give it one more day. Everyone agreed that you could probably push it today. It may feel OK, but it is best to give it one more day.”

Teixeira missed two games at the end of July for the same reason and had a cortisone shot. The Yankees have considered putting him on the DL this time around, but it sounds like they are going to avoid that. It’s probably best to give him as many days as he needs now to get to 100 percent for September and more importantly October.

Pettitte, A-Rod both headed for x-rays tonight

Via Chad Jennings, both Andy Pettitte (leg) and Alex Rodriguez (hand)) will have x-rays later tonight to check up on their fractures. Mark Teixeira hasn’t swung a bat all weekend, but he will take ground balls and run through some drills tonight in anticipation of returning to the lineup tomorrow. I’m willing to bet he gets another day off just to be safe; no reason not too really.

Yankees pregame: Concern about Teixeira; Valentine gives himself a bad grade

Brian Heyman here for Chad again today. Mark Teixeira is out of the starting lineup for the second straight game due to his left wrist inflammation. “He’s a little bit better today,” Girardi said. “He’s not a player for me today. I wouldn’t imagine so. We’ll see in the next couple of days if we [...]

Yankees postgame: Home runs galore; Hughes makes a change

The Yankees hit five homers in this 6-4 win over the Red Sox, all solo shots. The homer total tied a season high, and not coincidently the previous time also came against Boston pitching. “Yeah, the home runs, that’s the way they live and they had a whole bunch of them tonight,” Bobby Valentine said [...]

Robinson Cano returns, Mark Teixeira sits with sore wrist

The Yankees have Robinson Cano back from a sore neck Friday in the opener of a three-game series against the Red Sox, but Mark Teixeira is absent from the lineup due to an inflamed wrist, the LoHud Yankees Blog reports. Teixeira initially injured the wrist on July 29 and missed a couple of games. “It’s…

Teixeira’s wrist is still bothering him

The wrist injury that Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira suffered through about three weeks ago still hasn’t gone away and it may even keep him out of the lineup tonight, according to George King and Don Burke of the NY Post.

Teixeira initially injured the wrist during an at bat against the Red Sox in late July. He tried to play through it, but re-aggravated it on a defensive play two days later. MRI’s were done at the time that came back clean, but he was forced to sit out a few games.

“He might get a rest, but no tests are scheduled,” Brian Cashman told The Post. “It’s definitely not as bad as before, but it’s still bothering him. … He’s icing it for maintenance purposes.”

Since he sat out, Teixeira has slumped a little. Over his last 14 games he has hit .259/.328/.463 so maybe some extra time off will be good for him. It sucks that he has to miss at least part of the Red Sox series as he’s crushed them this year as he has hit .256/.286/.667 in nine games against them so far.

Teixeira still bothered by nagging wrist injury, may not play tonight

Via George King and Don Burke, first baseman Mark Teixeira is still being bothered by the left wrist inflammation that sidelined him for a handful of games late last month. “He might get a rest, but no tests are scheduled,” said Brian Cashman. “It’s definitely not as bad as before, but it’s still bothering him … He’s icing it for maintenance purposes.”

Teixeira received a cortisone shot in the wrist roughly two weeks ago and has gone 14-for-54 (.259) with two doubles and three homers since returning to the lineup. He initially hurt himself on a swing and aggravated the injury further diving for a ball on defense. Just rest him tonight … heck, rest him all weekend. Take advantage of the big division lead and get this right before it’s too late.

Hiroki Kuroda tosses two-hit shutout against Rangers

The Yankees need a healthy CC Sabathia if they hope to make a legitimate run at the World Series, but Hiroki Kuroda continues to prove that he’s no slouch, either. Kuroda limited the Rangers to just two hits in a complete game 3-0 win tonight at Yankee Stadium. It was his fourth career shutout and…

And That Happened: Thursday’s scores and highlights

Mets 6, Marlins 1: R.A. Dickey continues his dominant year. He struck out ten and didn’t walk any while tossing a complete game. And we may see more of him soon. Royals 8, Orioles 2: Manny Machado made his major league debut. Two for four with a triple. Not bad! No one else did anything,…

Cano highlights Baseball America’s Best Tools feature

Baseball America published a feature looking at the best tools in the Major Leagues today (subs. req’d), polling managers and I believe other team officials in various categories. Robinson Cano was all over the American League rankings, placing second in Best Hitter (behind Miguel Cabrera), second in Most Exciting Player (behind Mike Trout), and first in Best Defensive Second Baseman. Joey Votto was named the Best Hitter in the NL, Andrew McCutchen the Most Exciting Player.

Mark Teixeira (tops in Best Defensive First Baseman), Andy Pettitte (tops in Best Pickoff Move), CC Sabathia (second in Best Slider to Chris Sale), and Derek Jeter (third in Best Hit-and-Run Artist behind Elvis Andrus and Erick Aybar) also cracked the rankings in various categories. The minor league edition of best tools will be out tomorrow.

The Offensive Slumps

(Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

The Yankees seem like a relatively close-knit group of guys this year. They always appear to be enjoying each other’s company and whatnot in the dugout and off the field during various public functions. I don’t think the whole “25 guys, 25 cabs” theory applies to this team, just speaking as an outsider. The Yankees are so close-knit that they even slump together, as we’ve seen the offense do for stretches of time this season. There was The Great RISPFAIL Tragedy in May, and more recently a number of players have simultaneously hit the skids.

During this ugly 6-11 stretch, the Yankees have hit just .255/.313/.407 as a team and have averaged 4.4 runs per game. That’s down from their season marks of .264/.335/.458 and 4.8 runs per game. Slumps happen, they’re part of the 162-game season, but when a team plays .780 ball for nearly 50 games and suddenly hits a wall, it’s very easy to notice. Here are some of the top offenders…

Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, and to a slightly lesser extent Raul Ibanez have been carrying their weight during this slide, but otherwise that’s basically half the lineup in some kind of slump. Teixeira’s coincides with his wrist injury (fun!), Ichiro‘s with his arrival in the Bronx. He was supposed to be a platoon player but has instead started every game the Yankees have played since being acquired. So much for that platoon idea.

Now, this is the definition of arbitrary endpoints here. You go back as far as the data lets you prove your point and then stop right there, the laziest kind of “analysis” out there. Teixeira’s is slightly less arbitrary because of the injury, but whatever. The point is that there are a number of players in the lineup right now who just aren’t performing as well as they usually do regardless of how long it’s been going on, and it’s contributing to the losing. Ichiro might not snap out of it because he’s 38 years old and rarely hits anything with authority, but Granderson and Swisher should get themselves right in due time and hopefully Teixeira will do the same as he gets further away from the wrist problem.

As poorly as Ivan Nova pitched yesterday, the Yankees still only mustered two unearned runs against Justin Verlander. He’s a great pitcher and all but the Yankees have gotten to him before, including twice this season. There was no way the team was going to continue to play .780 ball through the end of the season, but the Bombers have lost some very winnable one-run games during this stretch because nearly half the lineup — including three key top-five hitters in the batting order — just haven’t been themselves. I suppose that’s just the natural order of baseball’s balancing act.

The Offensive Slumps

Mike Baxter’s Saturday feat a first in nine years

Five-walk games typically happen once or twice per year, and Mike Baxter‘s Saturday against the Padres was even more unusual than most. Baxter, the Mets’ right fielder, became the first player since Florida’s Ivan Rodriguez on April 8, 2003 to go 0-for-0 with five unintentional walks in a game. The 27-year-old Baxter entered the night…

Teixeira says wrist is OK, returned to lineup

With all of the injuries the Yankees have had lately, they could hardly afford to lose Mark Teixeira. Unfortunately that’s exactly what happened to start the week after he re-aggravated his wrist making a diving play in the field Monday.

By Friday he was back out there against the Mariners, playing the field and going 1-for-4 at the plate.

“There’s no structural damage so there’s not much to have to heal other than inflammation getting out,” Teixeira told Jorge Castillo of the Newark Star-Ledger. “That’s what the cortisone’s for. The cortisone and the rest, that’s a good combination.”

“It’s just a little soreness you got to take care of and I think that’s where we are,” Teixeira said.

Teixeira initially injured the wrist while swinging at a pitch on Saturday against the Red Sox, but tried to play through it. It’s good to have him back, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a few extra off days in the next week or two.

Yankees postgame: Sabathia dominates

CC Sabathia has generally been good, his previous start against the Red Sox notwithstanding. But he finally turned in a dominant start, allowing just three hits and fanning 10 in this 6-3 win over the Mariners. “CC’s a winner,” Joe Girardi said. “Very seldom I have ever got to worry about CC. I thought he [...]

Yankees to re-evaluate Teixeira’s wrist today

It’s possible that Mark Teixeira, who has sat out most of this week with a sore wrist, can play against the Mariners tonight, but first he will need to be re-evaluated by team doctors.

Teixeira initially hurt his wrist during an at bat against the Red Sox on Saturday, but tried to play through it until he re-aggravated it in the field on a diving play Monday. He went in for a MRI that revealed no damage and had a cortisone shot to reduce inflammation. Girardi said earlier in the week that he would be out at least three days and would re-evaluate him before determining when he could play again.

If he is cleared by the team doctors, he could be back in the lineup tonight. My expectation is that he won’t play though as the Yankees will need him more in October than they will now so they’ll play it safe. Missing two more games is much less significant than if he is ineffective for the next two weeks or longer.

Winners and losers at the trade deadline

One person’s thoughts on who made out best and worst at the trade deadline. Winners Texas Rangers: GM Jon Daniels wasn’t interested in parting with third baseman Mike Olt, much less shortstop Jurickson Profar, in order to counter the Angels’ Zack Greinke pickup, but he was able to keep his best prospects and land Ryan [...]
