2012-13 NBA Hoops Stars in a Watch & Win Episode of Panini America Unwrapped

Join Panini America’s Tracy Hackler and Chris Reed for a must-see episode of Panini Unwrapped starring 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball, the first NBA product of the new collecting season featuring Panini America’s historic Double Rookie Class, the first installment of the cross-brand Kobe Anthology set and so much more.

After the video, simply leave your candid feedback on the product for a chance to win one of four boxes of 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball.

Panini America Shares Highlights from the First Box of 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball

I have a confession to make: The Panini America Marketing team didn’t wait until its traditional taping of Panini Unwrapped – like we normally do — to open our first box of 2012-13 NBA Hoops. Like most basketball collectors, we simply couldn’t wait.

So when Humberto Percy dropped off the marketing allotment of Hoops boxes last night, it was too late to film Panini Unwrapped — but I decided to crack the wrap on that first box anyway. Like I said, I couldn’t resist. Not to worry, we used another fresh box to film Panini Unwrapped this morning — and that must-see episode is coming later along with a chance for you to win one of four boxes.

As for last night’s first box? While we didn’t capture it on video, I did document the myriad highlights from the behemoth 36-pack break with my trusty iPhone camera. What follows is a massive 70-image first-box recap showcasing some base cards, many of the Rookie Cards from our historic Double Rookie Class, the Glossy and Artist’s Proofs parallels, the inserts, the autographs, the first installment of Kobe Anthology — you know, a little bit of everything.

So dive into the following gallery as you prepare for tomorrow’s release of 2012-13 NBA Hoops — and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for that aforementioned episode of Panini Unwrapped.

Andrew Bynum laughing and smiling after Lakers lost

I’m not sure what’s so funny about your team losing a playoff game, but Andrew Bynum obviously found something hilarious after the Lakers lost Game 2 to the Thunder 77-75. Bynum was spotted in the background of a Kobe Bryant shot from the TNT cameras with a big smile on his face when his team was walking off the court.

According to Kevin Ding, Bynum was laughing about Metta World Peace’s inbound pass on the final play of the game. No matter how you view it, it was an awful reaction and the latest example him acting immaturely.

Will Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point record stand forever?

Wilt Chamberlain is getting his due today, on the 50th anniversary of his 100-point game.

And while in theory there is no such thing as an unbreakable record in sports, isn’t it likely that this one will stand for however long the NBA exists?

Kobe Bryant has come the closest to catching Chamberlain, with an 81-point game in 2006, but at the age of 33 it’s hard to envision him mounting another assault on the record.

Kobe Bryant having further symptoms, sent to neurologist

The Los Angeles Lakers say star guard Kobe Bryant is experiencing further symptoms from his broken nose. And the Los Angeles ear, nose and throat specialist who saw him Tuesday sent him to get an MRI and to see a neurologist.

Insisting he meant no harm, Dwyane Wade revealed Tuesday that he has apologized to Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant multiple times for a blood-drawing, nose-breaking foul during Sunday’s All-Star game.

The first of those apologies, Wade said, came during the game when he saw Bryant’s face had been bloodied. Wade also said he sent the Lakers’ star a message after the game in Orlando on Sunday night.

Is Dwyane Wade a dirty player?

NBA All-Star games are about as meaningful as a Kim Kardashian marriage, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting take aways from last night’s action.

Dwyane Wade is earning a bit of a reputation in some circles as being a somewhat “dirty” player. Some believe he crossed a line when injuring Rajon Rondo in last year’s playoffs for instance, and last night did nothing to help his reputation.

While I’m not going to say he intentionally injured Rondo or intentionally broke Kobe Bryant’s nose, he certainly crossed a line.

Lakers Hold Players-Only Meeting

It was an odd time for a players-only meeting — minutes after a blowout victory over Portland — but the Los Angeles Lakers felt they needed to clear the air. So, according to sources, team leaders Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher gathered everyone together in the Lakers’ locker room Monday night and tried to set the tone for the second half of the season.

Their message was clear: Trade rumors do not matter; your feelings about management or the coaching staff don’t matter; all that matters is that the 14 men in that locker room support and believe in one another. If they stay together and stay on the same page, they can get to where they want to go as a team.

Since the Lakers’ impressive 103-92 victory over the Blazers took place before the meeting, it’s hard to tell what effect the talk will have, but the Lakers seem to believe the meeting was productive and that the club is making progress.

Lakers lose to Bucks, now 1-7 on the road

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Drew Gooden scored 23 points and the undermanned Milwaukee Bucks made sure the Lakers’ road struggles continued, beating the Los Angeles Lakers 100-89 on Saturday night.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 for the Lakers, who are 1-7 on the road this season.

Ersan Ilyasova and Mike Dunleavy added 15 points each for the Bucks, who managed to beat the Lakers without two of their best players.

Already scrambling to compensate for the long-term absence of injured center Andrew Bogut, the Bucks found themselves without guard/forward Stephen Jackson on Saturday because of an NBA suspension.

Bryant made six free throws to break Jerry West’s franchise record for free throws made. Coming into Saturday’s game, Bryant needed three makes to tie West’s mark of 7,160.

Bryant also came closer to becoming the Lakers’ career leader in field goals made. He was 10 of 21 from the floor Saturday, leaving him three short of the 13 field goals he needed to tie Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s franchise record of 9,935 field goals made.

Even without Bogut and Jackson, the Bucks were in control most of the way. Ilyasova hit a jumper at the horn to end the third quarter, and the Bucks took an 80-73 lead into the fourth.

The Bucks led 85-76 after an inside score from Ilyasova with just under eight minutes left, but Bryant scored five straight points to cut the lead to four.

But Luc Richard Mbah a Moute hit a jumper, then Gooden scored on a turnaround hook shot and hit a pair of free throws to run the lead back to 91-81.

Andrew Bynum scored inside, but Dunleavy hit a long jumper to give the Bucks a 93-83 lead with just over two minutes left.

After Bryant made a pair of free throws, Dunleavy drilled a 3-pointer to put the game away with 1:24 left.

The Bucks managed the beat the Lakers without Jackson, whose suspension was announced a few hours before the game.

The NBA suspended Jackson one game for verbal abuse of a game official and failure to leave the court in a timely manner at the end of the Bucks’ 107-100 loss at Chicago on Friday night.

It’s another rough moment for Jackson, who was benched by coach Scott Skiles in the Bucks’ Jan. 20 game at the New York Knicks.

Bogut, meanwhile, fractured his left ankle in Wednesday’s game at Houston and is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks – a crushing blow for Milwaukee.

Without Bogut, the undersized Bucks faced a tough test from the Lakers’ pair of 7-footers: Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

But they held their ground on defense early on, taking a 51-43 lead at halftime. The Bucks forced the Lakers into 10 turnovers in the first half, and limited Gasol to six points on 3 for 10 shooting.

Gasol finished the game with 12 points and 15 rebounds, but was 6 for 18 from the floor.

Lakers rookie guard Andrew Goudelock scored 13 points despite being hospitalized for dehydration overnight. Goudelock was coming off his best performance of the year, having scored a career-high 14 points against the Clippers on Wednesday.

Kobe scores 42, Clippers still beat Lakers

LOS ANGELES (AP)—The Los Angeles Clippers showed they could beat the Lakers even with Kobe Bryant going over the 40-point mark for the fourth consecutive game.

Chris Paul scored 33 points, Blake Griffin had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and the Clippers led all the way in winning 102-94 on Saturday night, their second victory in four days over one of the NBA’s elite teams.

“It’s early. We’re not going to get too high with these wins,” Paul said. “We definitely made strides in the right direction defensively and with rebounding. We got to make that habit and not a one-time thing.”

Chauncey Billups added 19 points, former Laker Caron Butler had 13 points and DeAndre Jordan had 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who beat Miami 95-89 in overtime on Wednesday and have won five of their last six.

Paul limped off after hitting a jumper in the final minutes and said after the game that he hurt his left leg and would see a doctor.

Griffin said he wasn’t concerned with the doubters who wonder if the Clippers may finally shed their reputation as perennial losers.

“It’s definitely going to take time if we’re going to remove that label,” he said. “We don’t care. We’re worried about this year.”

Paul, Billups and Butler—all added before the season began—are paying early dividends. Paul, who had 27 points against the Heat, was originally headed to the Lakers from New Orleans until Commissioner David Stern nixed the deal.

“They couldn’t guard him,” Billups said of Paul. “Coming off the pick-and-rolls, he was unstoppable. His shot was on point and he really caused them a lot of problems.”

The Clippers controlled the boards 50-42, including a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass, despite being the league’s worst rebounding team playing against the league’s best.

“We talked about how they focused on the glass and they just did a terrific job on the boards,” Bryant said. “Seventeen offensive rebounds is a lot of offensive rebounds. That’s the area that really killed us. We did a pretty good job defensively in holding them to a low shooting percentage, but 17 offensive rebounds and 25 second-chance points, that’s tough to deal with.”

Bryant notched his fourth straight game of 40 or more points but the Lakers had their five-game winning streak snapped by their Staples Center co-tenants, who beat them twice in the preseason. Bryant was 14 of 28 and made 12 of 14 free throws. He had 42 against Cleveland on Friday, 48 against Phoenix on Tuesday and 40 at Utah on Thursday.

“When a player of that caliber is looking to shoot that many times, he’s going to make shots,” Griffin said.

The Lakers got no closer than five points early in the fourth quarter as the visiting team. Bryant broke out for 21 points in the third, but he was limited to 10 in the fourth against the Clippers’ double teams.

“Kobe got going and we came with some different coverages on him,” Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. “He hit some tough shots, but I thought overall we controlled the tempo of the game in the fourth quarter, which was one of the big keys for us.”

Derek Fisher had no luck in containing Paul and the 37-year-old Lakers guard didn’t return until there were 4 minutes left in the game.

“We didn’t do a good job as a team on him,” Bryant said. “We were short in our pick-and-roll coverage and let Chris kind of split us, mess around with the ball, dribble through the lane and do all the stuff that we’re not supposed to let him do.”

Billups and Paul hit consecutive 3-pointers to help the Clippers extend their lead to 67-53 midway through the third.

Bryant took over from there, scoring 17 of the Lakers’ final 19 points of the quarter to close to 76-72. He began and ended the spurt with 3-pointers and in between hit 7 of 8 free throws while the Clippers were held to nine points over the final 5 minutes.

“I was just getting in spots to be effective and I was hitting my mid-range jumpers,” Bryant said. “We were struggling and it just seemed like we were kind of dead in the water. I didn’t get us off to a good start at all. I took the responsibility to try and generate some energy and try to get us back in the game. We were able to do that, but they made two big 3s to stretch it back out.”

The Clippers’ biggest first-half lead was 55-42 at the break. They outshot and outrebounded the Lakers, who were better in the paint.

The Lakers twice closed within three points in the second quarter, but the Clippers outscored them 16-6 to end the period, with Billups, Paul and Griffin combining for 14 points.

The Clippers opened the game on a 13-4 run, then outscored the Lakers 13-9 to lead after the first quarter. Things got chippy in the final 12 seconds when Darius Morris went up for a basket after Paul was whistled for a foul and Griffin pushed off him with both hands as Morris came down.

“We knew it was going to be a grind and get chippy,” Jordan said.

Lakers coach Mike Brown got incensed and was called for a technical, while nothing was called on Griffin. Morris had the last word, though, when he sank a jumper from before the half-court line at the buzzer as Paul tried to cut him off. Metta World Peace and Grififin also had technical in the game.

Notes: Clippers F Brian Cook left midway through the second quarter with a sprained left ankle. … The Clippers improved to 5-1 at home and 6-0 this season when taking a lead into the fourth. … The Clippers have sold out all six of their home games. … The Lakers were playing their fifth game of the week and their 14th of the season, tying Chicago for most games played. … The Clippers have played just nine games, fewest in the league. … Clippers backup G Mo Williams missed the game because of an injured right foot that he hurt on Tuesday at Portland. … Lakers G Jason Kapono is adjusting to sleepless nights after his wife gave birth to premature twin girls named Campbell and Isla earlier in the week. “Thirty minutes is like three hours. It’s all been a blur,” he said.

Kobe goes for 40 against Jazz

Kobe Bryant scored 40 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers over the Utah Jazz, including a pair of free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining for the final margin of 90-87.

Al Jefferson, who was coming off a season-high 30-point effort against Cleveland on Tuesday, was held to 11 points on 5-of-17 shooting for the Jazz.

Paul Millsap led the Jazz with a season-high 29 points, hitting 14 of 24 shots.

“It felt good to get a road win here,” Bryant said. “It’s a very tough place to play and it was a huge test for us.”

Kobe Bryant day-to-day with torn wrist ligament

Kobe Bryant will not play in tonight’s final preseason game for the Los Angeles Lakers because of a right wrist injury.

Bryant, who was injured in Monday’s 114-95 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, was examined Wednesday by Dr. Steven Shin of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic and had an MRI exam.
In a statement, the Lakers said Bryant has a torn lunotriquetral ligament and his status was day-to-day.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the lunotriquetral ligament stabilizes two of the smaller bones on the outside of the wrist. Recovery can take from several days to several weeks depending on whether it was a partial or complete tear.
