James Harrison may have to undergo knee surgery

According to Mike Bires of TimesOnline.com, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison might need to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery.

“The Steelers remain confident that James Harrison will be ready for the season opener. But there is a chance he may need arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee before then,” reported Bires.

Harrison is getting older and a knee scope isn’t a good thing, especially right before the season.

Greg Oden out for season after more knee surgery

Greg Oden has suffered yet another setback with his troublesome knees.

The often-injured 7-foot center was undergoing a minor procedure Monday to clear out debris in his left knee in Vail, Colo., when the surgeon determined there was additional damage and performed microfracture surgery, the Portland Trail Blazers said.

The former No.1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft has now had two microfracture surgeries on his left knee, and one on his right. He has also undergone surgery for a fractured left kneecap.

The Blazers say Oden will not play this season.

Mohamed Massaquoi has cast removed

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi has had the cast removed from his left leg and could be practicing soon.

Massaquoi was in a walking boot Wednesday. He arrived at training camp in a foot-to-knee cast, and the Browns have been reluctant to discuss his injury. Browns coach Pat Shurmur said earlier this week that the third-year wide receiver has a bone injury. Shurmur said it’s possible Massaquoi, who caught 36 passes last season, could practice next week.

Also, defensive end Jayme Mitchell was kept out of practice with what Shurmur described as a sore knee.

Running back Montario Hardesty again worked on the side with trainers as he continues his comeback from knee surgery. Hardesty has yet to practice with the Browns this summer.

Dustin Pedroia returns to Boston, knee surgery possible

Entering the season, we knew that Dustin Pedroia’s surgically repaired left foot was going to be an issue. He told us as much, way back in January. Pedroia then added a right knee injury to the medical chart in mid-May, and he’s headed back to Boston for an exam and possible surgery.

It’s obviously too early to speculate on the nature of the injury, which might not be anything too serious (in the office pool I’ve got “partial meniscus tear”), but this clearly isn’t great news.
