Jeff Demps’ agent denies deal done, nearly everyone else says it is

While it certainly appears at this point that Jeff Demps is going to be a Patriot today, his agent is denying the deal is done. Demps’ track agent, Nohemy Baltodano tweeted that “Those reports are untrue!” (And the exclamation mark makes it more believable.) Meanwhile, Mark Cook of PewterReport.com writes that a decision is expected…

Ed Reed thinks Joe Flacco has grown as a man

Ravens safety Ed Reed raised some eyebrows during the playoffs when he was critical of quarterback Joe Flacco’s play in a victory over the Texans. Reed accused Flacco of getting “rattled” by the Houston defense and said he thought Flacco didn’t have a grasp of the offense. A little firestorm bubbled up after Reed’s comments, [...]

James Carpenter might miss all of 2012

The Seattle Seahawks were roundly criticized for drafting offensive tackle James Carpenter in the first round of last year’s draft, and the early signs on Carpenter’s career aren’t promising. He struggled in nine rookie-year starts, particularly as a pass blocker, and tore his ACL on the practice field in November. Carpenter opened training camp on…

Report: Steelers still optimistic about signing Wallace long-term

Monday’s deadline for signing players with a franchise tag to a long-term contract doesn’t apply to players with restricted free agent tenders, so there’s nothing stopping the Steelers from signing wide receiver Mike Wallace. Nothing except their inability to agree to terms with Wallace, that is. We heard earlier this month that there’s been little…

Richard Deitsch of SI.com reports that the network has signed four of their best-known contributors to multi-year deals. Mel Kiper Jr. signed a six-year deal with the network that will keep him front and center during the draft, [...]

Batch, Clay hoping to join Steelers backfield

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back John Clay is looking to prove the doubters wrong.

The former Wisconsin star is in camp with the defending AFC champions after going undrafted, leading some to second-guess his decision to leave the Badgers after his junior season.

Clay says he’s using the criticism as motivation, and he’s hoping to find a spot as a goal-line and short-yardage specialist for the Steelers.

He has plenty of competition. Fellow rookie Baron Batch has turned heads with his physical play during camp. Batch is looking to make an impact on special teams and land a spot on the roster.

Both are expected to see plenty of action when the Steelers open the preseason at Washington on Wednesday.
