Breaking Down Ohio State’s Ranking in the AP Preseason College Football Poll

Saturday’s release of the Associated Press preseason college football poll had the Ohio State Buckeyes ranked as the No. 18 team in the country.
Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes are, of course, banned from this year’s bowl season, which means they are subsequently banned from the USA Today coaches’ poll. But they are still eligible for the AP Poll this year.
Fans around the country got a better glimpse of the Buckeyes last week during ESPNU’s All-Access Training Days show, getting to know the players and coaches around Ohio State.
However, most of the things surrounding Ohio State’s ranking just barely inside the Top 20 are mostly what we don’t know.
We don’t know for sure what the new offense featuring Braxton Miller will look like.
We don’t know how much or how little OSU’s skill players, especially at the receiver positions, have improved. We also don’t know if the offensive line can improve after a disastrous 2011 season and losing three starters in the process.
What we do know is that Ohio…

Goebel: “I’m excited. It is an honor that your teammates think that highly of you to name you a captain. I’m going to put everything I have into this responsibility.”

Hall: “This is a dream come true. I was hoping to be named a captain but I was also a little surprised when it happened. I can’t thank my teammates enough for selecting me for this honor.”

Sabino: “I’m really excited. This is such an honor…to get voted by your teammates to be their captain. I am just really honored to be named a captain.”

Simon: “Being named captain means a lot. I appreciate the votes of the players. This is one of the biggest honors a player can receive and I’ll be proud to lead this team along with four other great guys. We’ll have a really good season if we all lead well.”

Ohio State Names 2012 Captains

Ohio State’s senior captains were selected by the team Sunday night and the list includes five seniors. John Simon, Zach Boren, Etienne Sabino, Garrett Goebel and Jordan Hall were each selected by their peers to lead the Scarlet and Gray.

John Simon: Two-time captain.

“Announcing who are team captains is one of the great honors I get to do as head coach,” head coach Urban Meyer said. “We had a number of guys get votes. This is a really good group of seniors who I am very proud to have leading this team.”

The quintet has a combined 185 games of experience between them, including 74 starts. Simon becomes just the seventh two-time captain in the program’s storied history and first since James Laurinaitis in 2007 and 2008.

“Being named captain means a lot,” Simon said. “I appreciate the votes of the players. This is one of the biggest honors a player can receive and I’ll be proud to lead this team along with four other great guys. We’ll have a really good season if we all lead well.”

Quotes from the rest of the group:

Boren: “It is a dream come true and a huge honor to be named a captain at The Ohio State University. I am appreciative and thankful, and I look forward to being a leader on this team this season.”

Ohio State Football: Buckeyes Freshmen Who Will Make Immediate Impacts

The Ohio State Buckeyes play their first regular-season game in less than two weeks, meaning we are just days away getting our first real look at the team’s promising freshman class.
Master recruiter Urban Meyer did an excellent job once again, bringing in a haul that includes many of the best players in the nation. From dominant defenders to potent offensive weapons, Meyer addressed all of the Buckeyes’ pressing needs in the offseason.
While it will take some time for some of the freshmen to adjust, you can expect the following three players to contribute immediately.

Noah Spence, DE

Noah Spence is an absolute monster on the defensive line, and he will thrive in Meyer’s speed-rushing schemes.
Spence is big (6’4″, 245 pounds) and intelligent, and his burst off the line of scrimmage is just ridiculous. He explodes from the edge, and with his relentless aggression, he often sheds multiple blockers on his way to the quarterback.
In his senior season at Bishop McDevitt in…

Ohio State Buckeyes Ranked 18th In AP Poll

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State football team will open the 2012 season ranked 18th in the Associated Press poll released Saturday morning. The Buckeyes received a total of 474 points from the 60 national writers, just behind Nebraska’s 485 at No. 17.

Ohio State leads all FBS schools with 789 appearances all-time in the AP Top 25 poll. Michigan is second at 775 appearances. Ohio State has appeared in the AP preseason poll for 24 consecutive seasons, the longest streak in the country. Oklahoma is second with 13 straight appearances.

A total of five Big Ten schools are ranked in the top 20. Michigan comes in at No. 8, followed by No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 13 Michigan State.

Ohio State kicks off the 2012 season at Noon, Sept. 1 against Miami (OH) at Ohio Stadium.

Luck of the Draw: A $1,500 Panini America Sketch Card & Four Other Crazy Sales

Anyone who watched Indianapolis Colts rookie Andrew Luck play during his decorated college career at Stanford can attest to the undeniable artistry he brings to the quarterback position. The accuracy. The precision. The ability to deliver one masterpiece after another.

All of that was on display once again last week during Luck’s first promising preseason performance. But if you really want to see a true artist at work, check out what Luck can do with a few Sharpies in his hand.

Last Sunday, just hours after Luck went 10-of-16 passing for 188 yards and two touchdowns during a 38-3 victory over St. Louis in his NFL debut, one of Luck’s original Panini America Sketch Cards from the 2012 NFLPA Rookie Premiere sold on eBay for the staggering sum of $1,500.

This particular Luck masterpiece — fittingly an accurate and overwhelmingly impressive rendition of Lucas Oil Stadium — created quite a buzz when it was unveiled earlier this month at the 33rd National Sports Collectors Convention. It probably didn’t hurt his handiwork that Luck earned a degree in architecture design from Stanford.

But that insane four-figure closing price is but one example of the crazy money being spent on Luck’s best Panini America trading cards these days. Earlier this month, a 2012 Elite Football Passing the Torch card autographed by both Luck and Peyton Manning sold for $830.99. His 2012 Elite Football Hard Hats Autograph changed hands for $548.08; his 2012 Elite Football Turn of the Century Autograph card bearing the sequential number 12/99 — his jersey number — sold for $450; and one of his Prestigious Picks signed prime-piece jersey cards from 2012 Prestige Football sold for $425.

Collectively, those staggering sales represent a sure sign that collectors are anticipating a banner season from the 2012 NFL Draft Class and, in this case, Luck has everything to do with it.

Take a look.

Arizona-Arizona State football rivalry is heating up

Apathy? Put a pitchfork in it. Football indifference in Arizona has gone the way of the wishbone. Two college coaching hires made within 23 days of each other have changed the dynamics of fandom in the state. Programs feel energized. Coaches feel challenged. The additions of Todd Graham in Tempe and Rich Rodriguez in Tucson have set the tone for Arizona's best territorial duel since the Battle …

Ohio State Football: 10 Reasons to Be Excited About the 2012 Season

Can you believe college football will be back in less than two weeks? I know I can’t!
As hard as it is to fathom, college football fans all over this bright and wonderful world will either sit in front of their television sets, listen over their radios, watch from their computers, or attend the games first hand to witness their favorite football teams play this fall.
Just like a new chapter of college football will begin, so will a new era of Buckeye football under the leadership of first-year head football coach Urban Meyer. Buckeye fans, players, coaches, and alumni alike are filled with anticipation and there are plenty of the reasons why. But for now, let’s narrow down the list a bit.
Without further ado, here are 10 reasons to get excited about this upcoming season.

Sunday Skull Session

Usually when I wake up in the morning, my routine involves checking my e-mail, my text messages and obviously a read-through of the morning Eleven Warriors Skull Session.

However, in the last few weeks, the first thing I do is check the date and take one day off the countdown to Ohio State football season.

12 more days.

Oh yeah, welcome to your Sunday Skull Session. It has been quite a week and weekend.

IN THE POLLS. It is very strange to take a quick glance at the USA Today Coaches Poll and not see the Buckeyes. Yeah, we got a taste of that last year but it's nothing OSU fans can ever get used to. As most people know, OSU is ineligible from being in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but not the AP Poll.

Yesterday, the AP Poll came out and here are the teams touched by the very grace and benediction of bored college sports writers who deigned to give them their top vote:

1 USC (25) 0-0 1445

2 Alabama (17) 0-0 1411

3 LSU (16) 0-0 1402

4 Oklahoma (1) 1286

8 Michigan (1) 0-0 1000

Yes, Michigan got a number one vote. As mentioned in the Buckshots, Bob Asmussen from the Champaign News-Gazette has been huffin' those sweet, sweet Wolverine fumes, but as Sarah pointed out on Twitter, this isn't exactly unprecedented. Other B1G teams in the top 25:

12 Wisconsin 0-0 838

13 Michigan State 0-0 742

17 Nebraska 0-0 485

18 Ohio State 0-0 474

We'll see how it all plays out, but I personally believe this is a good spot for the Buckeyes to start.

Check out the whole AP Poll here.

POTENTIAL “TRANSFER”. Ron Patterson, a member of Indiana's Top 10 incoming 2012 basketball class, is “transferring” and has received interest from Ohio State, among other schools.

Patterson, a 6'3″ shooting guard from Indy suburb Broad Ripple, has sufficient scores and grades to play Division I basketball, but didn't fare well enough in summer classes for full admission into IU. The shooting guard committed to IU in August 2010. Schools showing interest include a number of high- and mid-majors, including OSU, Illinois and Purdue.

Missouri, Louisville, Purdue, Illinois, Ohio State, Memphis, Villanova, Providence among schools expressing interest in Ron Patterson.

— Jeff Rabjohns (@JeffRabjohns) August 17, 2012

While each university has its own standards, it makes you wonder if Patterson — who will be deciding between attending a prep school and another four-year university — would be admitted at OSU.

Certainly the Buckeyes have room for another strong guard, and Patterson's reputation for defensive tenacity and additional ability to score could fit Thad Matta's system.

IT'S ALL GOOD. Freshman running back Bri'onte Dunn was found not guilty of the disorderly conduct charge filed against him a few weeks ago in Alliance, Ohio.

Here's a snippet from the World Wide Leader's report from yesterday:

Dunn was stopped by police on July 28 just before training camp was set to open for the Buckeyes, and a small amount of marijuana was found in his vehicle along with a pipe. He was initially cited for possession of both marijuana and paraphernalia, but those charges weren't supported by additional examination of the evidence — including testimony from his mother, Donna Hatcher, who indicated those things were in the car before she loaned it to Dunn.

Dunn has faced no public discipline from Meyer relating to the incident, and he's drawn early praise for his work on offense this month as he competes for the No. 2 job in the Ohio State backfield.

Buckeye assistant Stan Drayton had a nice quote about Dunn following the final verdict:

“Bri'onte Dunn has really had a good, physical camp. With the ball in his hands, he's really good.”

It's great to know that legal issues shouldn't keep Dunn off the field this season. He is really needed with Jordan Hall injured.

TWO QBS? There has been much discussion about Urban Meyer using both Braxton Miller and Kenny Guiton this season, perhaps on the field at the same time.

Meyer mentioned that Guiton has done a 180 since he took over the team back in November and if he's one of the best 11 players, he will see the field.

Guiton told the Dispatch:

“I have to always be ready and I know Coach Meyer has used two quarterbacks in his system,” most famously with senior Chris Leak and freshman Tim Tebow on the 2006 Florida national championship team. “We’ve actually talked about that. That’s one thing I am trying to work hard on and try to let him recognize that maybe I can do that.”

When Meyer began the job at Ohio State, he would only gush about Braxton Miller and how excited he was to coach him. Now, he talks about Guiton in the same light as Miller.

Check out the whole Dispatch article here. It really is beginning to seem like Guiton will be one of the top billed Buckeyes on the squad this coming season.

Will Buckeye fans see multi-QB packages? How will it work?

LINKS FOR DAYS. Let's poke fun at Ohio State (and the other sanctioned programs)… And, let's forget about Ohio State in the poll… The 51st consecutive year with no Duke in the polls… The littlest Gasol is walking on at UCLA… Congrats to Minnesota, your 1904 National Champions… FIBA says Olympic basketball shouldn't change… The funny viral video of the week, if you're craving a snack… Look at all the countries that could fit their entire populations into Ohio Stadium (scroll down)… Ohio State basketball fluff here and here… Wayne Selden has OSU on his short-list.

The Arizona-Arizona State football rivalry is heating up

The additions of football coaches Todd Graham in Tempe and Rich Rodriguez in Tucson have set the tone for Arizona's best territorial duel since the Battle of Picacho Pass in 1862. The stakes are enormous, and the teams' Nov. 23 meeting in Tucson is only a small part.

Ohio State Football: Why the Buckeyes Were Ranked No. 18 in the AP Poll

What a terrible season it was last year for the Ohio State Buckeyes, as they finished with a 6-7 record and dropped out of the AP Poll for the first time since 2004. The good news is that Ohio State is back in the rankings, as they have landed the No. 18 spot in the 2012 preseason AP Poll.
One of the things that the college football polls do is create a lot of drama between fans. And one of the issues that many may have is the current position of the Buckeyes. How can a team that struggled mightily to score points, had a losing record and only won three conference games, begin the season ranked?
Here are the reasons why Ohio State is sitting comfortable in the most recent AP Poll.

Ohio State Football: Buckeyes Who Will Break Out in Urban Meyer’s Offense

Braxton Miller and the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offense will be revitalized under the new offensive scheme from new head coach Urban Meyer.
Meyer’s spread offense has arrived in Columbus, Ohio, and it will change the way the Buckeyes play and win football games.
But who is going to step into the roles that Meyer needs to fill in order for his offense to take flight at the Horseshoe?
The Buckeyes’ “Big Ten” style of football hasn’t exactly equipped Meyer with the necessary tools to execute his game plan. NCAA sanctions probably haven’t helped matters for the new head coach, either.

Braxton Miller
You’ve all seen Miller scramble and know that he has the ability to play the part of the mobile quarterback that Meyer’s option-spread offense demands.
What you didn’t see very much of was Miller airing it out last season. Sure, he did at times, but under Meyer you’re going to get to see it a lot more.
The QB is going to be…

Re-energized: Urban Meyer bringing new attitude, approach to Ohio State

On the day he was introduced as Ohio State’s 24th head coach in November, Urban Meyer outlined a relatively simple list of expectations for his players, his staff and himself. “I want a bunch of coaches that coach like their hair’s on fire, and I want a football team that goes four to six seconds of relentless effort,” he said. “You do that, you have a chance to win in every game you play …

Saturday Skull Session

Hi there Saturday Skullians. Have you been glued to the TV all week? Is that even a valid question? Of course you have. ESPN’s All Access has given fans a glimpse into the OSU football program that most have only dreamt of. It’s been enough to give me goose bumps a few times and I think it’s time for football season to start.

I know it might be difficult for you to handle any more Buckeye insider access without your head exploding from lack of actual football, but here’s your friendly reminder that OSU’s edition of the BTN Summer Football Tour will air tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET. Watch it. Discuss. Hooray football!

LINEBACK IT UP. As Kyle touched on earlier in the week, the Buckeyes have fielded a long and illustrious list of amazing linebackers. During Tressel’s tenure it seemed there was rarely any drop-off at the position from season to season. As we all know, that certainly wasn’t the case in 2011. Now, questions linger for the Buckeyes at LB heading into 2012.

The Dispatch’s Bill Rabinowitz wrote a piece discussing how sophomores Curtis Grant and Ryan Shazier are being counted on to bolster a unit viewed as the defense’s weakest.

At times last season, Shazier played like a man possessed on his way to tallying the most tackles for a true freshman (57) since Andy Katzenmoyer’s 86 in 1996.

As Rabinowitz pointed out, Grant was OSU’s highest-ranked recruit last season, but his inability to grasp the playbook relegated him to the sideline more often than not.

In 2012, that doesn’t sound like the case. This from Coach Fickell:

“[Grant’s] one of those guys that I’ll lay my head on my pillow knowing he’s going to give you everything he’s got. He’d die for this game. He loves this game. He studies it. He works at it. He’s got a chance to be a great player because of his passion to play football.”

Grant will need to show that level of passion on the field and in the film room if he is going to be successful. Penciled in as the starting middle linebacker, Grant will essentially act as the quarterback of the defense. Luckily, the sophomore is backed by nine returning starters taking the field with him on the defensive side of the ball.

The success or failure of the Buckeye defense in 2012 will have a lot to do with the progress of these two young talents (specifically Grant). If Ohio State wants to continue its dominance at the LB position, Shazier and Grant will have to step out of their sophomore shoes quickly.

THREE IS A MAGIC NUMBER. In a write-up yesterday, CBS Sports outlined three questions the Buckeyes must address in fall camp: can Braxton Miller master the offense, who will emerge at receiver, and can the front seven improve?

Getting it right.Mastering the offense of the master.

I feel these are the same questions Buckeye fans have been asking themselves since the conclusion of last season. It seemed most of them remained unanswered at the end of spring ball, but reports coming out of fall camp lead me to believe some of these issues may be closer to resolution than many (including Coach Meyer) felt possible back in April.

Reports state Miller worked tirelessly with receivers during the dead period between spring and fall ball. Back in April, Meyer told his QBs and receivers their progress or regression would have everything to do with getting out and doing exactly that, and it sounds like they took his words to heart. Sophomore receiver Evan Spencer had this to say about their down-time:

“We were always doing something. Always. When we were tired from a workout, we went in and watched film and dissected some film. If we had a day off, we’d come in here and talk through some routes. The offseason was really good for all of us.”

In addition, junior receiver Philly Brown added this about his QB’s development:

“Braxton improved everything. He’s a hard worker. He’s one of the hardest workers on the team. Throwing, he’s always trying to throw, always trying to lift, always trying to run. He improved his overall game a ton this offseason.”

Players are always going to say they’ve been working hard, so it was encouraging to hear wide receivers coach Zach Smith say the group is progressing nicely and that they should be where the coaching staff wants them by Sept 1. As far as a standout in the group, Smith said Philly Brown has been the most impressive of all of the receivers thus far in camp.

In response to CBS’ other question about whether the front seven can improve, I don’t see any scenario in which they don’t. With supreme talents like Noah Spence and Adolphus Washington coming in to bolster an already stout line, this group has nowhere to go but up. If Nathan Williams is able to stay injury-free and the young LB corps puts it together, I think we’ll see a huge step forward from this cohort in the upcoming season.

BELLAMY QUESTIONS ANSWERED (KIND OF). Junior D-lineman Adam Bellamy has been absent since last Sunday’s media day, and Ohio State finally put some questions to rest, announcing yesterday that Bellamy left the team for “personal reasons”. Speaking to reporters after practice, Coach Vrabel didn’t rule out a possible return:

“Adam is working through some personal family matters right now and when he gets that taken care of, we will welcome him back with open arms. We miss him in our (meeting) room and when Adam gets those things take care of he's going to be able to come back.”

The 6’4’’ 292-pounder tallied 25 tackles last season and was tabbed as a co-starter with Nathan Williams on the team’s latest depth chart.

One can only hope for a happy ending to this story, and I’m sure Adam knows Buckeye Nation is rooting for his return.

REHAB FOR HONEY BADGER. According to Fox 8 news in New Orleans, former LSU star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has checked into the Right Step drug rehabilitation center in Houston.

Tyrone Mathieu says his son is committed to restoring his health and won't play football until he is confident that his rehab is complete. That may rule out the possibility of Mathieu transferring to a school at the FCS level and playing this season, after which he would be eligible for the NFL draft.

Personally I think this is great news for Mathieu. If his problem is as serious as it sounds, getting help is the absolute right choice. College campuses can harbor a lot of demons for some individuals, so the last thing Mathieu would want to do is throw himself back into that environment. According to LSU, there was no shortage of “environments” vying for Mathieu’s services as the school reported approximately 20 college football programs have asked the Tigers for permission to speak with the former Heisman Trophy finalist about transferring.

A quick look at Mathieu’s Twitter account would suggest the Honey Badger has already started his road to recovery:

Football is like life – it requires perseverance, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for Self!

— Tyrann Mathieu (@TM7_Era) August 17, 2012

And he’s got no shortage of people rooting for him:

Hoping & praying Honey Badger finds the right path to success in life -this is a smart moveespn.go.com/college-footba…

— Dick Vitale (@DickieV) August 17, 2012

Here’s hoping the Honey Badger gets a second chance, because everyone deserves one.

Bri’onte Dunn acquitted of disorderly conduct charge

Ohio State running back Bri’onte Dunn had his day in Municipal Court Friday, where a magistrate acquitted him of disorderly conduct.

Magistrate Jean Madden found the evidence insufficient after hearing from four witnesses, including Dunn, during a bench trial. The disorderly conduct charge was a minor misdemeanor and didn’t carry any jail time.

Madden found Dunn, 19, guilty of traffic violations involving license plate illumination and not wearing a seatbelt, for which she fined him $60 plus court costs.

The case stemmed from a July 28 incident when police stopped a car Dunn was driving after it allegedly almost hit a police cruiser at a blinking red light.

Police said they found a small amount of marijuana and a pipe in the car, which was registered to Dunn’s mother, and initially cited Dunn and his 18-year-old passenger for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

But a review of the evidence didn’t support those charges, according to the city Law Department, and Dunn was charged with disorderly conduct.

During Friday’s trial, Law Director Andrew Zumbar called three witnesses: Police officer Robert Rajcan; Dunn’s passenger that night, McKensey Cross; and Dunn’s mother, Donna Hatcher.

Cross, who pleaded no contest last week to disorderly conduct, said she and Dunn were both smoking marijuana.

Hatcher told the court the marijuana was in her car before she loaned the vehicle to her son, but said  she didn’t know how it got there, according to Zumbar.

When Dunn took the stand, he denied smoking marijuana, and defense attorney Eugene O’Byrne presented the results of a drug test showing Dunn was negative for marijuana and other drugs after the incident.

While that testimony concerned the circumstances of the traffic stop, the disorderly conduct charge was based on Dunn almost striking the police cruiser and then impeding the flow of traffic for about 25 minutes as police searched for marijuana.

Madden ruled that those facts were insufficient to support a conviction.

After the verdict, Zumbar said he wouldn’t ask Judge Robert Lavery to review Madden’s decision.

Dunn, a GlenOak High School graduate and standout football player, is a freshman at Ohio State.

A message was left Friday with O’Byrne seeking comment.
