In the not so distant past, when a Big Ten player decided to transfer, it almost always signaled the end of his Big Ten career.
The Big Ten’s old policy stipulated that a player who transferred from one Big Ten school to another couldn’t receive athletics aid at his new destination. While some players still made the moves and paid their own way — Wisconsin-turned-Minnesota safety Kim Royston comes to mind — the rules typically steered transfers to other leagues.

Brett Favre won his first game as offensive coordinator for Oak Grove High School of Hattiesburg, Mississippi last night, unleashing his troops for a 64-6 stomping of Sumrall, their unsuspecting opponents.

As you can tell from the photo above, Favre seems to be settling into his role as a coach quite nicely, tearing into an official after a blown call like he’s been doing it for years. And based on the lopsided score, it seems that the 3-time NFL MVP’s offensive game plan for the Warriors did the trick too. With the win, Favre continued his personal streak of debut victories, having won his first starts with the Packers, Jets and Vikings as a player.
ESPN’s Ed Werder visited with Favre and spoke with the ole’ gunslinger about the challenges of his new position. To his credit, Favre genuinely seems to not want to be a distraction to his players, and is trying to be “just one of the guys”. And of course, Favre is bringing his trademark child-like enthusiasm for the game, which must be a blast for these high school kids to be around.
VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP
If nothing else, we shouldn’t have to hear any more speculation as to whether or not Favre is coming back to play in the NFL (knock on wood). And that’s just a win for everyone.

ESPN pins are very popular during the Little League World Series. They are some of the most sought after and valuable pins you can get. These pins aren’t the easiest to obtain either. A few years ago when I was in Williamsport, I passed an ESPN camera man with a ton of pins. I asked him how you can get them, and he refused to talk to me. I’ll have to try again this year. When I talked to that camera man, Sports Card Info was only a couple of years old. Its much more famous now, ESPN should know who I am this time around… haha! :-)
This pin is kinda cool as it features the ESPN 3D camera men as members of the Ghostbusters. I’m not sure why they would associate them with the Ghostbusters. Perhaps the equipment they use looks like their proton packs. Its limited to 100.
Our 2012 preseason position rankings come to a close today as we wrap up with the special-teams units.
When looking at special teams, you have to rely on what teams did last year and who they bring back, as it’s extremely difficult to get a read on new kickers and punters during preseason practice. So teams that rank the highest on this list have reliable kickers and return men back in the fold. While the top and the bottom are fairly easy to sort out, the middle is pretty indistinguishable.

There was a scary scene at Michigan practice this morning, as true freshman defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins suffered a neck injury and was taken to the hospital.
Head coach Brady Hoke said in a statement that Pipkins had movement in all of his extremities and that he was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons. No further information about the injury is available at this time.
Pipkins is a 340-pounder who had impressed teammates and coaches with his athleticism and nimbleness for his size so far this training camp.

During ESPN.com’s college football preview coverage this week, we took a look at the state of the game and the state of some of the sport’s best-known brands. Now we’re examining the state of the conferences. Here’s the health report on the Big Ten:
Stability: In many of the ways that matter, the league has never been stronger. While the Big Ten initiated the conference realignment craze, it smartly added just one team — Nebraska — that has so far been a perfect fit in every area.

Yesterday I suggested that the Giants lose five wins due to Melky Cabrera‘s steroid use. Those five wins were based on Melky’s WAR. Stephen A. Smith pretty much echoed that post on Around the Horn Thursday afternoon. Start listening at about the 7:40 mark.
Maybe we came up with the same idea. It happens. But if he read my post and used it on ESPN, it would have been nice to give this site a bit of credit. I do like that he ties this in to something the NCAA does when they make players ineligible.

ESPN’s first 2012 Heisman Watch is out, and two Big Ten players are in the top four of the initial poll.
Wisconsin’s Montee Ball, a Heisman Trophy finalist last season, checked in at No. 2 behind USC quarterback Matt Barkley. Ball did not get a first place vote but received nine second-place votes from the 15-person voting panel.
West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith was third, followed by Michigan’s Denard Robinson, who received two second-place votes.

We don’t spend a lot of time discussing, or interviewing, punters and kickers around here.
Nothing against them, it’s just that they sometimes seem to occupy their own little planets. Most fans probably don’t even think much about them until they shank a field goal or a punt in a big situation.
But we ranked the Big Ten specialists earlier today, and the guy atop that list deserves to be talked about frequently. Nebraska senior Brett Maher had to replace star Alex Henery last season, and all he did was become the first Big Ten player to be named the all-conference punter and place-kicker since 2001.

Our preseason position rankings have reached the end of the line. We’ve looked at the entire offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Now it’s time to focus on that often neglected one-third of the game: special teams.
First, we’ll examine the top returning individual specialists in the league. Later on, we’ll take on the more difficult task of ranking special-teams units, many of which will have new names few of us know.
But for now, these guys are pretty special:
1.

Michigan State’s defense is getting a whole lot of offseason hype — including a bunch in this space.
The publicity is understandable given the returning talent and the performance by that defense last year. There’s also a possible hidden advantage for the Spartans to have such an abundance of playmakers on that side of the ball: It’s helping the much-less-talked-about offense.
Head coach Mark Dantonio’s philosophy is to match up the first-stringers in practice every day.

Quarterbacks, no matter who they are or what their situation is, always face pressure.
It’s the most visible and vital position on a football team, and fans are quick to judge every decision or call for the backup. They don’t call it Monday Morning Left Guard, after all.
Pressure can come in different varieties, however. In the Big Ten this year, some quarterbacks have more riding on their performances than others. Who’s got the most pressure on them this year?

In a move that had been rumored for some time, former Nebraska offensive lineman Ryan Klachko officially transferred to Illinois on Wednesday.
Klachko, who redshirted last year for the Huskers, will sit out this season and will lose a year of eligibility, giving him three seasons to play for the Illini. He’s a 6-foot-4, 290-pound guard who was an ESPN 150 recruit in the class of 2011.
The transfer makes sense because Klachko is from Springfield, Ill.
