Ndamukong Suh wants to take down Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning

AP

Detroit lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh isn’t looking to clean up his reputation.  Instead he wants to take down more quarterbacks.

“I love hitting Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler. Ben Roethlisberger, I would like to go against him, because they say he’s one of the hardest to take down,” Suh said, via NFL.com. “I see that as a challenge, so I would love to take him down multiple times. Peyton Manning, oh, I would love that. I think Michael Vick, I did sack him, one of the most elusive quarterbacks to ever play the game. I took him down with one arm.”

Suh explained what a dirty player is.

“A dirty player is somebody who ultimately is trying to hurt somebody. There’s a huge difference,” Suh said. “There’s no gray in that. Like, you have no conscience, no nothing, no guilt. I don’t have that mean streak in me. I don’t play angry. It’s not anger.”

John Elway says Peyton Manning looks just as good as he did a few years ago

AP Photo

Denver Broncos Executive VP of football operations John Elway told USA Today that quarterback Payton Manning looks just as good as he did a few years ago.

“He’s throwing the post route and everything well,” Elway said. “I went back and looked at film from 2010 and 2009 to get a comparison of Peyton, and he looks to me to be the same guy throwing now that he was then.

“The ball is coming out quicker all the time the more and more time he gets with the offense and getting to know all his receivers and tight ends. … That’s always been his style. He’s never been the Nolan Ryan of quarterbacks anyway. He’s always throws the ball with great anticipation and touch.”

I believe once Manning get’s into a nice groove with his new receivers during the regular season, he’ll be just fine.

Broncos’ Jason Hunter could miss the season after tearing his triceps

AP Photo

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, defensive end Jason Hunter suffered a triceps tear and will be out for the next two months.  There’s also a chance he’ll miss the entire season.

“Jason Hunter, who had been promoted to first-string defensive end ahead of Robert Ayers two weeks ago, suffered a triceps tear that will sideline him at least two months and could end his season. Hunter appeared to sustain the injury while popping a blocking sled as the defensive linemen were working through a technique drill,” wrote Klis.

Peyton Manning says his arm isn’t the same due to age

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning told Jim Rome on Rome via ProFootballTalk.com that he believes his loss of arm strength comes from age more than the neck procedures he underwent.

“I still have strength to recover, still have work to do,” Manning said. “I am 36 years old. My arm has a lot of yards and a lot of touchdowns on it, so it’s probably not going to be the same as it was when it was 22, but I still think it can complete some passes. I can move the chains and hopefully get our offense into the end zone this year.”

Manning brings up a good point, what 36 year-old quarterback hasn’t lost some arm strength?  If you don’t know the answer….every one of them.

Eric Decker says when the Broncos signed Peyton Manning it was like “Christman morning”

AP Photo

Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker told NFL AM on the NFL Network that he was very excited when he found out Peyton Manning  had decided to sign with the Broncos.

“I was excited,” Decker said. “I can’t tell you, I guess, the feelings I had. It was like I was a little kid (on) Christmas morning. (I was) more excited for the opportunity to play with one of the best in the league and have a chance to really jump-start my career.”

I think the entire state of Colorado was in the Christmas spirit when Manning signed with the Broncos.

NFL reportedly planning on using replacement officials during the regular season

AP Photos

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the NFL is now planning on using replacement officials during the regular season.

“League executives said Monday they now foresee starting the 2012 regular season with replacement officials,” reported Mortensen.

With the way these officials have been calling games during the preseason, the NFL would be stupid to not strike a deal with the regular officials.

John Elway says if Peyton Manning wins two more Super Bowls he’ll be the greatest ever

AP Photo

Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway told Albert Breer of the NFL Network that Peyton Manning is only a couple Super Bowls titles from being the greatest ever.

“Winning championships, that’s the only way,” Elway said. “If he wins two more championships, he’ll be, without a doubt, the greatest quarterback ever to play the game. So when I said that, for me, what I meant, that’s about winning world championships. He’s got the numbers, he has the stats, those will never change, they’ll just get better and better.

“But for us to make Peyton the greatest quarterback that’s ever played, what will separate him, because now he’s in the conversation, if he wins a couple more before he’s done, then he’ll be right at the top of the list.”

That’s it?  All Peyton has to do is win two more Super Bowls?  Wow that should be easy.  Ok, I’m being sarcastic, but Elway certainly makes it sound easy when Manning is now on a brand new team and likely only has another two to three years left in his career.  I personally believe he’ll be lucky to win one more title.

Broncos surprised teammate with items he lost in wildfire

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Ben Garland lost everything in the Colorado wildfires.  So his teammate decided to replace some of the most important things he’s not able to recover.

USA Today has the story:

“Several of Ben Garland’s Denver Broncos teammates gathered around him after practice Tuesday and gave him two silver sabers to replace those he received upon graduating from the Air Force Academy, along with a Falcons football helmet.

“He was presented with the shiny swords by William “T” Thompson of the Association of Graduates at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Then, linebacker Joe Mays gave him a new college helmet, white with a blue lightning bolt,” wrote USA Today.

“Thank you guys, it means the world to me and my family,” Garland said. “That’s one of the biggest things my grandma and my grandpa were sad about losing.”

“Mays said the Broncos wanted to do something for Garland after what he had gone through,” USA Today wrote.

“We’re glad that we could do something to put a smile on his and his grandparents’ faces,” Mays said. “He’s a great guy, an awesome guy, a great player. You want to do special things like that for a person such as Ben. The personality that he has, he always comes to work eager and willing to get better. He’s an awesome human being as a whole and I’m just glad we were able to get him something.”

It’s great to hear about something positive going on in the NFL.

Broncos’ Elvis Dumervil won’t be charged in road rage incident

AP Photo

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Miami-Dade attorney’s office didn’t agree with the assault charges that were filed against Broncos linebacker Elvis Dumervil, so they decided to not charge him with crimes associated with the road rage incident he was involved in.

“The state attorney’s office decided Tuesday to not formally charge Dumervil of any wrongdoing, reported Klis.

“It was a blessing that the investigators took the time to get the truth out,” Dumervil said. “I knew I didn’t do anything wrong. It was a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m just ready for football.”

Hopefully Dumervil learned his lesson and will deal with a situation like this in a different matter next time.

NFL Referee’s Association has a list of offciating errors from the HoF game

The NFL Referee’s Association was paying close attention to Sunday night’s Hall of Fame game between the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints.  They wrote up a report to keep track of the officiating errors made during the game.

“Professional NFL officials are graded after every game,” NFLRA counsel Michael Arnold said in a release, per ProFootballTalk.com.  ”Several of the NFL Referee Association’s officials who grade for Division-I college conferences did a review of the Hall of Fame Game working from a recording of the television feed.  Normally, there would be an opportunity to also view the ‘Coaches’ Tape, which provides two views of every play, but multiple costly errors were still evident.  Numerous errors in field mechanics, game administration and even the coin toss negatively impacted the quality of the game.”

The thing that really stuck out to me about Sunday night’s game is that there wasn’t one holding call made for the entire game.  I wonder if they noticed the players that were mocking the bad officiating as the game went on.

Roger Goodell says football needs to be included in the Olympics

Getty Images

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell believes that football should be included as an Olympic sport.  He told Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com on the Dan Patrick show, that he’s been taking the necessary steps to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

“Absolutely. We’re already taking steps to gain that IOC recognition. We have, I think, 64 countries that are playing American football now, and that’s one of the requirements. That’s been growing dramatically — I think it was 40 just five years ago,” Goodell said.

Goodell’s goal is to help the game of football to continue to grow.

“Our point is just to keep growing the game,” Goodell said. “We’re having a tremendous reaction in London and the UK for the game of football, our regular season game over there is sold out again this year, we are seriously contemplating as early as 2013 playing two NFL games next season and I think we’ll do that. It’s a response to the tremendous fan reaction and the growth of the game. If we can continue to grow the game there and have the fan reaction that we have, there very well may be a franchise in London.”

I think football would be a great olympic sport, but who would play?  NFL players would never sign up for the Olympics with the chance of ruining their careers by suffering an injury.  I believe they would rather be injured in an NFL game where their fighting for a Super Bowl ring.

John Madden doesn’t believe in the “Madden Curse”

Getty Images

Former NFL television commentator and the creator of the Madden football video game–John Madden–says he doesn’t believe in the “Madden curse.”

“I was on the cover for several years, and I never once even pulled a hamstring,” Madden said, breaking into a laugh, per the Detroit Free-Press. “It’s a violent sport. Injuries are going to happen.”

“If there was such a thing (as a curse), you couldn’t ask for a better man to prove that wrong than who we’ve got this year,” Madden said about Johnson. “He might be as close to indestructible as we’ve ever had on the cover. Maybe I shouldn’t say that…that might…I’m not going to talk about that any more.”

I’ll be honest I don’t believe in the curse either, injuries are very common in the NFL.

Peyton Manning says Demaryus Thomas can do things other player can’t

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning says that wide receiver Demaryus Thomas will be featured this season because of the things he can do that other players can’t.

“He’s a guy we’re going to feature,” Manning said, per Ros Dumlao of the Denver Post. “His size and strength and speed just allow you to do certain things with him that other players just can’t do.”

Thomas is a very good young receiver that will finally get a real shot at breaking out this season with Manning under center.

Broncos, Ryan Clady end contract talks, for now

Getty Images

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos and the representatives for left tackle Ryan Clady have agreed to end contract negotiations until the end of the 2012 season.

Clady is in the final year of his current contract and is set to make $3.5 million this season.

As far as we know the Broncos offered Clady a five-year, $50 million deal with $28 million guaranteed.  He obviously ended up turning the offer down.

Broncos likely limiting Peyton Manning’s deep throws

Getty Images

According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson via ProFootballTalk.com, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has been limited to only a handful of deep throws during practice.

“Manning has looked better than most people believed he would so far,” Anderson reported on Sportscenter. ”But here is a little bit of context: Yes, he’s looked good at the line of scrimmage. His balls have had zip. And the majority of them have been caught. But most of those balls have been short and intermediate, with only a handful of them long.”

Since the Broncos are keeping tabs on how many throws Manning makes during camp, it makes sense to not have him over stress his arm with throwing a lot of deep balls.

Peyton Manning looking “normal” at Broncos camp

AP Photo

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley is convinced that Peyton Manning is back to normal and looks great after being on the field with him thus far in training camp.

“To me, he looks great,” Stokley told the media on Saturday, per ProFootballTalk.com.  “I said that when I was working out with him six months ago. He looks like he’s just gotten better and better.  He looks normal.  That’s kind of not even a topic of discussion with us anymore.”

Broncos head coach John Fox is very happy with what he’s seen from Manning.  He says Manning has been “excellent.”

“The guy comes to work every day, whether it’s in that building or on that field, he attacks it like no other,” said Fox.

Broncos, Ryan Clady working on a new deal

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos and left tackle Ryan Clady are continuing to work out a contract extension.

With Clady going into the final year of his current contract, the Broncos have already offered  him a new five-year contract that would pay him $50 million, with $28 million guaranteed.

Clady apparently declined the offer.  It looks like he wants to be the NFL’s highest paid tackle.

Peyton Manning’s accuracy reportedly looks “impeccable”

Getty Images

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning looked very impressive even though he admitted his arm isn’t what it once was.

“On Thursday, after a brief run of high throws during some one-on-one drills, Manning’s accuracy was impeccable. He put throws in tight spots and consistently made it easy for his receivers. Working primarily with wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, and tight ends Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen, Manning put throw after throw into the tight window between the top of their shoulders and the top of their waist,” Coles reported.

Even though Manning’s arm strength has dropped off a bit, his accuracy may not have dropped off at all.  We’ll have to wait and see how he looks in a game situation.
