NFL reportedly planning on using replacement officials during the regular season

AP Photos

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the NFL is now planning on using replacement officials during the regular season.

“League executives said Monday they now foresee starting the 2012 regular season with replacement officials,” reported Mortensen.

With the way these officials have been calling games during the preseason, the NFL would be stupid to not strike a deal with the regular officials.

NFL Referee’s Association has a list of offciating errors from the HoF game

The NFL Referee’s Association was paying close attention to Sunday night’s Hall of Fame game between the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints.  They wrote up a report to keep track of the officiating errors made during the game.

“Professional NFL officials are graded after every game,” NFLRA counsel Michael Arnold said in a release, per ProFootballTalk.com.  ”Several of the NFL Referee Association’s officials who grade for Division-I college conferences did a review of the Hall of Fame Game working from a recording of the television feed.  Normally, there would be an opportunity to also view the ‘Coaches’ Tape, which provides two views of every play, but multiple costly errors were still evident.  Numerous errors in field mechanics, game administration and even the coin toss negatively impacted the quality of the game.”

The thing that really stuck out to me about Sunday night’s game is that there wasn’t one holding call made for the entire game.  I wonder if they noticed the players that were mocking the bad officiating as the game went on.

John Harbaugh says Joe Flacco “is really on the money”

AP Photo

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh told Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times that quarterback Joe Flacco has looked really good so far in training camp.

“Joe is really on the money, so that’s good to see,” said Harbaugh.

Flacco has made it clear that he believes he’s elite quarterback.  It will be up to him in 2012 to step his game up and prove the doubters wrong.

Roger Goodell says football needs to be included in the Olympics

Getty Images

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell believes that football should be included as an Olympic sport.  He told Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com on the Dan Patrick show, that he’s been taking the necessary steps to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

“Absolutely. We’re already taking steps to gain that IOC recognition. We have, I think, 64 countries that are playing American football now, and that’s one of the requirements. That’s been growing dramatically — I think it was 40 just five years ago,” Goodell said.

Goodell’s goal is to help the game of football to continue to grow.

“Our point is just to keep growing the game,” Goodell said. “We’re having a tremendous reaction in London and the UK for the game of football, our regular season game over there is sold out again this year, we are seriously contemplating as early as 2013 playing two NFL games next season and I think we’ll do that. It’s a response to the tremendous fan reaction and the growth of the game. If we can continue to grow the game there and have the fan reaction that we have, there very well may be a franchise in London.”

I think football would be a great olympic sport, but who would play?  NFL players would never sign up for the Olympics with the chance of ruining their careers by suffering an injury.  I believe they would rather be injured in an NFL game where their fighting for a Super Bowl ring.

John Madden doesn’t believe in the “Madden Curse”

Former NFL television commentator and the creator of the Madden football video game–John Madden–says he doesn’t believe in the “Madden curse.”

“I was on the cover for several years, and I never once even pulled a hamstring,” Madden said, breaking into a laugh, per the Detroit Free-Press. “It’s a violent sport. Injuries are going to happen.”

“If there was such a thing (as a curse), you couldn’t ask for a better man to prove that wrong than who we’ve got this year,” Madden said about Johnson. “He might be as close to indestructible as we’ve ever had on the cover. Maybe I shouldn’t say that…that might…I’m not going to talk about that any more.”

I’ll be honest I don’t believe in the curse either, injuries are very common in the NFL.

Report: Ravens, Flacco’s agent increasing contract talks

According to Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com, the Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Joe Flacco’s agent Joe Linta met on Sunday to continue negotiating towards getting Flacco a contract extension.

“The Ravens and the agent for QB Joe Flacco, Joe Linta, met Sunday to discuss a new contract for the fifth-year player. The meeting was held at the Ravens training complex in Owings Mills, MD. Both sides have been increasing discussions in recent weeks,” reported Caplan.

“It was good to meet with (general manager & executive vice president) Ozzie (Newsome) and (vice president of football administration) Pat (Moriarty) in person. We’ll continue to get at this as we go along here,” Linta told Thesidelineview.com.

I believe Flacco will have a new deal by the start of the regular season, or not far after.

Bryant McKinnie will report to Ravens camp on Monday

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, Ravens offensive lineman Bryant McKinnie plans on reporting to training camp on Monday.

McKinnie reportedly didn’t show up to camp on time because he was dealing with an “issue.”

The Ravens decided to fine McKinnie $30,000 for missing the first day of camp.  I’m not sure if they fined him any more.  There were also rumors that the Ravens might release McKinnie.  That might happen if he shows up out of shape and doesn’t perform well.

McKinnie has been reportedly dealing with an “issue” that has kept him from reporting to training camp on time.  He’s already be fined $30,000 for missing Thursday’s practice.

Courtney Upshaw in line to start for the Ravens

According to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, rookie linebacker Courtney Upshaw is in line to start at strongside linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens this season.

Just to make things clear, the strongside linebacker spot is not Terrell Suggs’ position, he’s a weakside linebacker.  Paul Kruger is set to start in his spot right now.

Ed Reed reports to Ravens camp

Every Baltimore Raven fan can finally breathe normally and exhale.  Ed Reed has reported to training camp.

Ed Reed works out at the Ravens facility (Video)

Getty Images

Just a day after saying he was going to play this season, safety Ed Reed was at the Baltimore Ravens team facility working out and it was all caught on camera.

After watching the video, I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to work out like Ed, so I can get some ripped abs like him.

All joking aside, we still don’t know if Reed plans on showing up to training camp on time, but my guess is that he will since he’s already made it clear that he’s playing this year.

Ed Reed says he’s playing this season

Getty Images

According to Brent Harris of CSN Baltimore, Ravens safety Ed Reed told him that he decided to retire early in the offseason, that’s why he didn’t show up for any of the offseason activities.

Reed then told Harris that he recently changed his mind and that he’ll play this season because he loves the game.

With Reed contemplating retirement, this could be his last season in the NFL, or not.  Hopefully he doesn’t turn into another Brett Favre.

Report: Ravens, Joe Flacco could get a deal done before training camp

Getty Images

According to Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com, the Baltimore Ravens are working hard to sign quarterback Joe Flacco to a contract extension.  Jeremiah’s source indicated that there’s currently a “75 percent chance” a new deal will get done prior to the start of training camp.

Flacco is going into the final year of his current contract.  But I don’t think there’s any way he’ll sniff the kind of money that Saints quarterback Drew Brees just received, (5-yrs, $100 million) since Flacco still needs to prove that he’s a true elite NFL quarterback.

Report: Ed Reed turned down a contract offer from the Ravens

getty images

According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSPorts.com,  safety Ed Reed turned down a new contract offer from the Baltimore Ravens that would’ve paid him just under $8 million a year.  The only problem with the offer is that it’s less than what Eric Weddle of the Chargers and Michael Huff of the Raiders currently make.  As we all know, Reed is a better then both of those players.

The Ravens concern with Reed is that he’s getting older and he’s already had neck and hip problems that could ultimately shorten the rest of his career.
