Luck of the Draw: A $1,500 Panini America Sketch Card & Four Other Crazy Sales

Anyone who watched Indianapolis Colts rookie Andrew Luck play during his decorated college career at Stanford can attest to the undeniable artistry he brings to the quarterback position. The accuracy. The precision. The ability to deliver one masterpiece after another.

All of that was on display once again last week during Luck’s first promising preseason performance. But if you really want to see a true artist at work, check out what Luck can do with a few Sharpies in his hand.

Last Sunday, just hours after Luck went 10-of-16 passing for 188 yards and two touchdowns during a 38-3 victory over St. Louis in his NFL debut, one of Luck’s original Panini America Sketch Cards from the 2012 NFLPA Rookie Premiere sold on eBay for the staggering sum of $1,500.

This particular Luck masterpiece — fittingly an accurate and overwhelmingly impressive rendition of Lucas Oil Stadium — created quite a buzz when it was unveiled earlier this month at the 33rd National Sports Collectors Convention. It probably didn’t hurt his handiwork that Luck earned a degree in architecture design from Stanford.

But that insane four-figure closing price is but one example of the crazy money being spent on Luck’s best Panini America trading cards these days. Earlier this month, a 2012 Elite Football Passing the Torch card autographed by both Luck and Peyton Manning sold for $830.99. His 2012 Elite Football Hard Hats Autograph changed hands for $548.08; his 2012 Elite Football Turn of the Century Autograph card bearing the sequential number 12/99 — his jersey number — sold for $450; and one of his Prestigious Picks signed prime-piece jersey cards from 2012 Prestige Football sold for $425.

Collectively, those staggering sales represent a sure sign that collectors are anticipating a banner season from the 2012 NFL Draft Class and, in this case, Luck has everything to do with it.

Take a look.

Panini America On Location: A Stacked Day Two at the 2012 NBA Rookie Transition

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Things took a decidedly high-brow turn for Panini America during Friday’s second day at the 2012 NBA Rookie Transition Program. Such is the case when 6-10 sensation Anthony Davis enters the room sporting the hippest, highest-altitude unibrow in the history of sports.

Much has been made of Davis’ trademarked solitary brow, and on Friday he continued having fun with it by devoting two of his three Panini America Sketch Cards to his foremost facial feature. The result? Two hair-praising pieces of handiwork — one featuring the inscription “Fear the Brow!!” and another urging readers simply to “Brow Down.”

But Davis — the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and an NCAA and Olympic champion — was far from alone in making a positive impression Friday. In all, more than 45 players from the 2011 and 2012 NBA Draft classes made their way through the Panini America room on Friday, including fellow Panini America exclusives Austin Rivers, Doc’s son and Davis’ New Orleans Hornets teammate, John Henson, Harrison Barnes and Andre Drummond.

Panini America officials punctuated the day-long cavalcade of NBA talent by sitting down with each player to secure autographs and other content for the company’s upcoming 2012-13 NBA products. Much of the action is captured in the revealing Day Two gallery that follows.

Next up? The 2012 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot that tips off bright and early Tuesday morning. Stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance next week for complete coverage of that star-studded event. But for now, simply enjoy the entertaining sights from Panini America’s Friday at the 2012 NBA Rookie Transition.

Panini America’s Weekly Redemption Card Update: Kobe, Magic, Megatron & More

In an effort to keep collectors updated on the status of those Panini America redemption cards that are currently being processed, we’ll post a list every week, like the one included in the attachments below, detailing the most recent cards being fulfilled this week.

The following list is intended to inform collectors about which redemption cards from which products are being processed this week. We’ll update this list every Friday afternoon, so stay tuned next week if you don’t see your card here.

This week’s report includes a high number of “rebatched” redemptions — cards from widely broken products that have been previously redeemed but required subsequent shipments due to high volume. In addition, we’ve also added yellow highlights for those cards that were redeemed via replacement. Finally, any multi-signed cards in this report featuring replaced players have been stamped “NO AUTOGRAPH” in that player’s designated signing area.

If you have specific redemption questions, you can contact the Panini America Customer Service department via email at hobby@paniniamerica.net and the Panini America Customer Service Manager via Twitter.

Here’s this week’s report in Excel format: August 17 Redemption Update

Panini America On Location: The 2012 NBA Rookie Transition Program (Gallery)

More than 75 of the most talented young basketball players on the planet — rookies from the last two NBA Draft classes — began gathering on the East Coast earlier this week to participate in the 2012 NBA Rookie Transition Program in advance of next week’s 2012 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot.

All the while, a healthy contingent of Panini America’s own basketball talent — Karvin Cheung, Ivory Tabb, David Porter, Keith Hower and Joe Reyes — have been busy behind the scenes securing autographs and other assets for a slew of the company’s upcoming 2012-13 NBA trading card products.

Things got started in earnest on Thursday with several key members of the 2011 rookie class, including Rookie of the Year and Panini America exclusive Kyrie Irving, Derrick Williams, Bismack Biyombo, Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker, Jimmer Fredette, JaJuan Johnson and more.

Much of yesterday’s activity revolved around casual conversation and on-card autographs for 2012-13 Threads Basketball. Our team of MVPs on the ground in New Jersey proved it was as adept at multitasking as it is at building compelling products by providing the following images from Day One.

Enjoy, and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional updates from the 2012 NBA Rookie Transition Program and next week from the 2012 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot.

PSA/DNA Adds Embedded Hologram Technology To Certificates of Authenticity

PSA/DNA Authentication Services  has now added an embedded hologram to its certificates of authenticity (COA), providing customers with  the same technological advance that the company added to its letters of authenticity last fall.

PSA/DNA issues four types of COAs: its regular PSA/DNA certificate, signed-in-the-presence certificates for autographs witnessed by PSA representatives as well as RookieBall™ and RookieGraph™ autograph COAs.  All four types of PSA/DNA COAs now have the embedded PSA/DNA logo hologram.

“We’re always looking at ways to improve security features of our products, and this is another major stop in combating counterfeits,” said PSA/DNA President Joe Orlando.  “The complexity of the embedded hologram technology took a long time to plan and implement, and it’s a major deterrent to counterfeiters.”

The detailed, color-changing PSA/DNA logo hologram on the COA is actually embedded into each sheet of paper used when generating PSA/DNA certificates of authenticity.

“It’s not a mere sticker placed on top of the page, but rather the hologram is actually part of the paper itself,” explained Orlando.  “Counterfeiters would have to illegally replicate the trademarked hologram and spend a huge amount of money to manufacture the paper.  There is no other third-party authentication service that uses this level of technology to offer advanced protection for collectors and dealers.”

2012-13 NBA Hoops Stars in a Watch & Win Episode of Panini America Unwrapped

Join Panini America’s Tracy Hackler and Chris Reed for a must-see episode of Panini Unwrapped starring 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball, the first NBA product of the new collecting season featuring Panini America’s historic Double Rookie Class, the first installment of the cross-brand Kobe Anthology set and so much more.

After the video, simply leave your candid feedback on the product for a chance to win one of four boxes of 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball.

Panini America Shares Highlights from the First Box of 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball

I have a confession to make: The Panini America Marketing team didn’t wait until its traditional taping of Panini Unwrapped – like we normally do — to open our first box of 2012-13 NBA Hoops. Like most basketball collectors, we simply couldn’t wait.

So when Humberto Percy dropped off the marketing allotment of Hoops boxes last night, it was too late to film Panini Unwrapped — but I decided to crack the wrap on that first box anyway. Like I said, I couldn’t resist. Not to worry, we used another fresh box to film Panini Unwrapped this morning — and that must-see episode is coming later along with a chance for you to win one of four boxes.

As for last night’s first box? While we didn’t capture it on video, I did document the myriad highlights from the behemoth 36-pack break with my trusty iPhone camera. What follows is a massive 70-image first-box recap showcasing some base cards, many of the Rookie Cards from our historic Double Rookie Class, the Glossy and Artist’s Proofs parallels, the inserts, the autographs, the first installment of Kobe Anthology — you know, a little bit of everything.

So dive into the following gallery as you prepare for tomorrow’s release of 2012-13 NBA Hoops — and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for that aforementioned episode of Panini Unwrapped.

The Panini America Quality Control Gallery: 2012 Rookies & Stars Football (77 Images)

After spending most of the morning scrutinizing the contents of the 2012 Rookies & Stars Football Quality Control cases, here’s how I can best sum up the venerable product that has been rejuvenated by new twists, throwback nuances and nods to past parallels: It feels like a refreshingly different Rookies & Stars experience.

And that’s a good thing for a product that turns 15 years old this season.

Panini America’s fourth product of the 2012 NFL collecting season will be live in hobby shops everywhere next week, but thanks to NFL Brand Manager Aik Tongtharadol, we get an exhaustive first glimpse at the product today.

From the 1998-era True Blue parallels to Longevity parallels that are broken down by card stock (sequential #’s 1-49 are on Double Rainbow, sequential #’s 50-249 are on Metallized) to the still-fascinating Slideshow insert, there seems to be a little something for everyone in 2012 Rookies & Stars Football — and quite a lot for rookie collectors, including a bold new RC design.

Take a look for yourself in the following gallery — and be sure to share your thoughts when you’re done.

Gallery: Pre-Packout Process Continues for Panini America’s 2011-12 Prime Hockey

You can trace the considerable buzz that reverberated throughout the hockey collecting universe last week (and reverberates still today) directly back to The Knight’s Lance. Indeed, our gallery documenting the pre-packout process for Panini America’s upcoming 2011-12 Prime Hockey was nothing short of an appetite-whetting, hit-generating sensation.

The good news? We have more sneak peeks to show you today. Panini America NHL Brand Manager Chris Barr was nice enough to share the following images from his weekend spent putting the finishing touches on the pre-packout process, including the first look at Prime’s unique Seams Incredible insert and additional glimpses at the compelling Prime Colors insert.

Up next? Prime gets ready for prime time with the actual packout process that begins later this week. Expect tons more images in the coming days. But for now, simply enjoy these . . .

Panini America’s Weekly Redemption Card Update: Catching Up on Last Two Weeks

First things first: We apologize for missing last week’s Panini America Redemption Card Update. We had good intentions, but the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore took us out of our normal routine. But we’re back on track this week with a simply massive Redemption Card Update detailing two weeks worth of fulfillment.

So, in our continuing effort to keep collectors updated on the status of those Panini America redemption cards that are currently being processed, we’ll post a list, like the one included in the attachments below, detailing the most recent cards being fulfilled this week.

The following list is intended to inform collectors about which redemption cards from which products are being processed this week. We’ll update this list every Friday afternoon, so stay tuned next week if you don’t see your card here.

This week’s report includes a number of “rebatched” redemptions — cards from widely broken products that have been previously redeemed but required subsequent shipments due to high volume.

Here’s this week’s report in Excel format: August 10 Redemption Update

The Panini America Quality Control Gallery: 2012-13 Score Hockey (39 Must-See Images)

Here’s reason No. 3,769 why every day at Panini America is a forever-entertaining, never-a-dull-moment, white-knuckle thrill ride: Just one day after previewing 2011-12 Dominion Hockey, one of the most lavish, super-premium NHL products in existence, we now get to preview 2012-13 Score Hockey, one of collecting’s most affordable, bang-for-your-buck bargains.

So even as they feverishly work on putting the finishing touches on 2011-12 Prime Hockey and 2011-12 Dominion Hockey in something of a high-end Texas heatwave, Panini America’s NHL Brand Managers also have one eye keenly fixed on quality controlling Score, the first product of the new season that began shipping today.

It was the subject of a Tweet this morning from Panini America NHL Brand Manager Chris Barr that got my Friday off to a fantastic start:

Cracked open some QC boxes of 12-13 Score. I’ll get the goodies to @tracyhackler to post on our blog next week!

— Chris Barr (@PaniniPuck) August 10, 2012

Clearly, I couldn’t wait until next week. If there’s one thing I know about readers of The Knight’s Lance and hockey collectors, it’s that they don’t like to wait for the first look of anything we do. So, like the gentleman that he is, Barr hand-delivered a wide array of compelling Score cards from the just-completed QC process, including Hot Rookies, autographs and such inserts as Net Cam, Check-It, The Franchise, Team Future and Team Score.

They’re featured below in all their glory. Enjoy this first look at 2012-13 Score Hockey and stay tuned for more next week.

Panini America Drool Gallery: The Splendid First Look at 2011-12 Dominion Hockey

The furious late-summer days around Panini America HQ are earmarked by many things. Our new-season NFL products already are hitting mid-season stride. Our next season of NBA products will tip off next week with the release of 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball. Our MLBPA roster is cranking with the launch of 2012 Triple Play Baseball and the upcoming launch of 2012 Cooperstown Baseball.

As for our NHL activity, August around these parts means one thing and one thing only: Pure, unadulterated high-end hockey. Indeed, Panini America will close the 2011-12 season with a bang over the next few months as the upcoming 2011-12 Prime Hockey will set the stage for the super-premium powder keg better known as 2011-12 Dominion Hockey.

We previewed many of the sweet scenes from Prime’s pre-packout process earlier this week. Today, we bring you an early look at some simply gorgeous Dominion autographs that have been returned so far. With my trust iPhone camera in one hand and a drool-dabbing wipe in the other, I spent most of my morning back in the massive memorabilia and autograph vault poring over eight monster boxes full of possibilities.

Stickside Signatures. Tape to Tape autographs. Rookie Cards. RC parallels. One-of-one NHL Shield patches. Flat-out sick swatches. Stanley Cup Champions. They’re all about six seconds away in the following gallery.

Enjoy, and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional updates and sneak peeks.

Demand for Trout Autographs Helps Former Players Too

When he was making his way into the limelight, some called Bryce Harper a ‘once in a lifetime’ prospect.  He may not even be a once in a season player.  Take nothing away from the Washington Wunkerkind, but Mike Trout is on the same platform.  Perhaps not since Mantle and Mays have 2009 orange refractor auto Mike Trouttwo players made such an impressive early impression.  Now, Trout’s success is having a trickle down effect.

Last December, he signed an exclusive autograph deal with Major League Alumni Marketing, a small company owned by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.   MLAM’s main business is autographs and while they may focus on selling signatures of former players, Trout has turned out to be a huge catch.  He was their first prospect signee and the move is turning out to be a shrewd one.

Clayton Kershaw and Josh Hamilton are also under contract with MLAM, but the demand for Trout autographs has surpassed all others.  The money paid into the account of the organization is divvied up among its 3,500+ members.

ESPN.com talked autographs with Matthew Hazzard, director of memorabilia.

Panini America’s History-Making Mail Day Features Vin Scully’s First Autographs

We’re on the receiving end of monumental mail calls almost every day here at Panini America. Such is the case when you’re dealing with autographs and memorabilia from the greatest athletes — upcoming, current, legendary — in the worlds of baseball, basketball, football and hockey.

But the fact of the matter is that some mail days are way more historic than others. Today was one of those days.

The epic notification email from our own Magale Rolden hit my inbox at 9:20 this morning. I was back in Acquisitions before 9:21. At long last, Vin Scully’s autographs for the upcoming 2012 Cooperstown Baseball had arrived. The legendary broadcaster has been the voice of Dodgers baseball — and the very voice of baseball royalty — for 63 seasons.

Scully earned the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Ford Frick Award in 1982 and he was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995. No broadcaster in the history of professional sports has been with one team longer. But he’s never before appeared on a certified autographed baseball card — until now.

Limited to 100 copies, Scully’s signature undeniably will be one of the biggest draws from the upcoming 2012 Cooperstown Baseball release. (Speaking of legendary members of the media, Peter Gammons’ Cooperstown autographs fittingly arrived today, too.)

You can get your first look at both Scully and Gammons in the gallery below. Also included: Revealing peeks at some of the Old School signatures from the upcoming 2012-13 Prestige Basketball . . . your first look at some of the autographed USA Baseball content from the upcoming 2012 Prime Cuts Baseball . . . and some jaw-dropping gems from the upcoming 2011-12 Dominion Hockey.

Take your sweet time to soak it all in and stay tuned . . . that next monumental mail day just might be tomorrow.
